Recently, two ostrich farms have reported the occurrence of rectal prolapse in young ostriches, which rarely occurred in breeding and transportation in the past.

It is understood that these two units bought one and a half-month-old ~ 3-month-old birds as commercial birds in the same ostrich farm, and 160 birds were purchased in one farm, and one died (no rectal prolapse occurred). Eight rectal prolapse occurred in the next 10 days, accounting for 5% of the total. Another market bought 150 birds, and 2 birds died when the transportation arrived (the journey was more than half that of the previous field). Rectal prolapse occurred in 9 birds in the next 15 days, a total of 11 birds, accounting for 7.3% of the total purchased. although a large number of birds occurred, the situation was more serious, but there was no death after simple surgical treatment.

Cause analysis

In order to reduce the stress reaction, the delivery unit has been given a multi-dimensional solution to prevent the bird before transportation.

The carriage for transporting birds has been paved with fine sand more than 10 centimeters thick, and the carriage is divided into small compartments, each about 1 square meter, and 8 ~ 10 birds are placed. This kind of packaging does not seem to be too crowded, the carriage is well ventilated, the thick sand cushion can slow down the bumps and vibrations, and the itinerary is highway, relatively stable, and the weather in October is neither hot nor cold, which is conducive to ostrich transportation. Therefore, from the packaging and transportation, weather and prevention and other work and conditions are very good, these will not be the causes of rectal prolapse.

Due to the feeding of ostriches before departure, some birds may be too full, which is an important cause of this disease.

When taking off and loading, bird hunting, especially selecting one by one, alarms the flock of birds seriously, intense bird catching, coupled with the impact of long-distance transportation, resulting in a strong stress response of ostriches, which is the main reason.

Constipation or gastroenteritis can also lead to rectal prolapse. In large flocks of birds, some birds may suffer from constipation or gastroenteritis. Under stress, these diseases increase the burden on the back of the abdomen, which can lead to rectal prolapse.

After long-distance transportation, the birds were not fed with electrolytes or multivitamin in time after getting off the bus in order to alleviate the stress reaction, so rectal prolapse occurred one after another within 10 to 15 days after getting off the bus.

Symptom

In large flocks of birds, all diet and activities were not abnormal, and breeders reported that individual feces were more solid.

The birds with rectal prolapse often have the phenomenon of anal contraction, the protruded rectum is about 2 cm ~ 3 cm long, inflamed by friction, some with blood and sediment pollution, and some with mild edema.

Treatment and treatment

The phenomenon of rectal prolapse of birds was not reflected until they saw more prolapse of the rectum after a period of time, and then instructed them to quickly replenish electrolytes such as stress leveling or multivitamin, minerals and trace elements such as 14, etc., before the birds slowly stopped the disease.

Isolated feeding and management of birds with rectal prolapse.

Treatment of rectal prolapse birds: wash the protruded rectum and around the anus with 0.1% potassium permanganate solution or alum water, normal saline, etc., wash away mud, sand and blood stains, remove sticky foreign bodies, apply anti-inflammatory drugs, and then repair.

Hands should be washed and sterilized and coated with Vaseline, paraffin oil or peanut oil. Fingers into the anus to recover slowly, in case of strong hard work to stop entering temporarily, wait for the fingers to push in, so that the prolapse of the rectum back to its original position.

In order to prevent the rectum from prolapsing again, the cigarette pouch (also known as purse) suture is performed after recovery. The stitches and stitches (usually cotton or silk thread) that are sterilized first will be injected into the skin around the anus at 4: 00 to 6: 00, and finally tighten the knot, which is not too tight or too loose, so that the rectum can no longer be protruded, and you can pull fecal urine for the degree.

To prevent inflammation, penicillin is finally injected around the anus. After treatment, the dynamics of the birds, such as appetite, drinking water, feces, activities, etc., should be observed. If everything is normal, the stitches of the birds should be removed after 7 to 10 days. It can be put back into the original group after a few days.

Prevention suggestion

The occurrence of the bird rectal prolapse due to timely detection and timely treatment, there was no death. There is no rectal edema, ulcer and necrosis caused by untimely treatment, which avoids troublesome resection operation. Therefore, prevention and timely treatment are extremely important, and the following suggestions are made.

According to the previous situation, there is no problem of rectal prolapse in the process of feeding or transportation of newly hatched chicks and 5-6-month-old young birds, but this time it is a half-month-old to 3-month-old bird. maybe the birds at this stage are more sensitive, and the capture and transportation will have a more intense stress reaction. Therefore, in the future, careful care should be taken for the transportation or hurdling of birds at this stage.

In order to avoid strong stress reaction, ostriches should be given tranquilizers, antistress agents, electrolytes and so on before departure, and electrolytes and multidimensional drugs should be given within a week after the birds get off the bus.

Ostriches planned for transport should not be overfed. For example, some green materials can be fed during long-distance transportation and adequate drinking water can be given during transportation.

Catch birds on the bus should be slow and careful, should not be caught by force, so as not to cause mass riots, causing psychological panic of birds, resulting in serious stress reaction.
