Balsam pear is one of the important vegetable species in the south of the Yangtze River in China. It has a long history of cultivation. Its ascorbic acid content is 14 times that of cucumber, 5 times that of wax gourd and 7 times that of tomato. Sometimes the yield of balsam pear is low. Let's take a look at Puhang balsam pear No. 1!

Balsam pear is a kind of vegetable that we often eat. Putian City has the tradition and rich experience of cultivating balsam pear, fine management and high yield level, in which the mode of spring double film cultivation of balsam pear is unique, with an output value of 12 ~ 150000 yuan per hectare. Most professional households choose their own local varieties, planting 'Minyan No. 2', 'Ruyu', 'Green No. 1' and other varieties in a small area. However, Putian local balsam pear has some shortcomings, such as species degradation, poor disease resistance and low yield potential after planting and retaining seeds for many years, so it is urgent to carry out research on variety purification and improvement.

For this reason, Putian Institute of Agricultural Sciences selected the seeds of an excellent local balsam pear plant 'Luo 0609' from Putian and carried out space mutation treatment on the "Shi No. 8" recoverable space breeding satellite in September 2006. its offspring were bred 'Puhang balsam pear 1' after four years and eight seasons of field directional selection, which was recognized by the non-major crop Variety Identification Committee of Fujian Province. The breeding process and the demonstration results of trial planting are summarized as follows.

Breeding process

Balsam pear is a Putian local variety of balsam pear reserved by farmers. It has medium maturity, light green fruit, narrow shoulders and good flavor and quality. Melon length 30~35cm, single melon weight about 350g, yield 2500~3000kg per 667m2, not resistant to downy mildew and Fusarium wilt. The breeding satellite "Shi 8" was launched at 15:00 on September 9. after 15 days in orbit, the satellite re-entry module was recovered and landed in Daying County, Suining City, Sichuan Province at 10:43 on September 24th. Putian Institute of Agricultural Sciences received the seeds on November 12th and kept them in the 6 ℃ refrigerator.
