Ministry of Agriculture warns that El Nino may adversely affect autumn grain production

Xinhua News Agency, Chengdu, July 27 (Reporter Wang Yu) Vice Minister of Agriculture Yu Xinrong said at the national autumn grain disaster relief and harvest site meeting held here that the current period is a critical period of "seven under eight flood control and drought relief." it is also a critical period for the growth and development of autumn grain and disaster prevention and mitigation, and it is necessary to pay close attention to and scientifically judge the adverse impact of the El Nino incident on autumn grain production.

According to the China Meteorological Administration, an El Nino event of more than moderate intensity is likely to occur this year. The occurrence of El Nino event will lead to the change of atmospheric circulation and extreme abnormal climate. Low temperature and overcast rain may occur in the south, autumn drought may occur in the north, and the first frost in the northeast may be earlier.

"if a moderate El Nino event occurs, as far as agricultural production is concerned, it will increase the chances of autumn summer drought, high temperature and heat damage, northeast early frost and southern cold dew wind, seriously threatening autumn grain production." Mao Liuxi, a researcher at the National Meteorological Center, said.

Yu Xinrong said: the northeast region should give prominence to preventing autumn drought and early frost, and focus on "accumulating temperature and promoting early maturity" to ensure safe maturity; the southern region should give prominence to preventing low temperature, overcast and rain and "Cold Dew wind" to ensure safe ear completion; Huang-Huai-Hai summer corn producing areas should give prominence to preventing summer and autumn drought to ensure safe maturity; and northwest and southwest regions should give prominence to preventing drought and low-temperature overcast and rain, preserving moisture and seedlings, and increasing temperature and promoting strength.

The reporter learned from the Ministry of Agriculture that up to now, the production foundation of autumn grain in our country is relatively good, and the area of autumn grain is expected to increase by more than 6 million mu. Coupled with the increase in the area of high-yielding crops, it is roughly estimated that this alone will increase the production by about 5 billion jin.
