As a kind of potted flower plant with high ornamental, orchid often has certain requirements on temperature for its normal growth. However, because of its many varieties, the temperature requirements are different. Epiphytic varieties usually have poor drought tolerance, so they like to grow in a warm environment; terrestrial varieties are more resistant to cold, so they like to grow in a cool environment with lower temperatures.

Epiphytic orchids prefer a warm growing environment, with hard-leaf orchids as a typical representative. Hard-leaf orchids are often found in some low-altitude areas of Yunnan, but if planted in areas like Kunming, it is often necessary to take necessary warm measures to survive the winter safely.

For terrestrial orchids, the cold tolerance is usually strong, represented by Cymbidium and Cymbidium, which can bloom as scheduled in the coming spring even after being buried with snow in winter.

At the same time, even for the same variety of orchids, due to regional differences, there are significant differences in temperature requirements. The spring orchids produced in Yunnan and Guizhou can often bloom normally in winter and spring, while the spring orchids suitable for growing in Jiangsu and Zhejiang can not bloom normally when they are planted and raised in Kunming.

The main reason is that the spring orchids in Jiangsu and Zhejiang have adapted to the cold climate in winter, and it takes a necessary period of low temperature to blossom. Practice has proved that in most areas of China, the most suitable temperature for orchid growth is between 10 °C and 30 °C. when the ambient temperature is lower than 5 °C or more than 35 °C, the orchid will grow slowly, and then show the trend of dormancy. The temperature during the period of propagation and breeding should be kept between 5-18 °C.

It can be seen that temperature has an important effect on the growth of orchids. However, it is certain that no matter which variety of orchid, the growth environment temperature is too high or too low, it is disadvantageous to the plant growth. Especially as a potted plant, the temperature must be kept within a suitable range, otherwise it will not only affect flowering, but also reduce the ornamental value of potted plants.
