Last Updated: 2024/11/05, Spirogyra is an aquatic algae plant belonging to the genus Spirogyra in the family of Double Star algae, also known as water moss. It grows mostly in fresh water, distributed in ponds, ditches, rivers, lakes, rice fields and other static water bodies rich in organic matter. In bloom, large masses are born at the bottom of the water, or float on the surface of the water in large clumps.

Spirogyra is an aquatic algal plant of the genus Spiraceae, also known as water moss. It grows in fresh water and is distributed in still water bodies rich in organic matter, such as ponds, ditches, rivers, lakes, rice fields and so on. When it is prosperous, a large area is born at the bottom of the water, or floats on the water in large clumps, the overall color is green, and it feels sticky and slippery to the touch. It can be used as bait for some fish, can also be used as medicine, has the effect of heat-clearing and detoxification.

Sponges are also harmful, and their hazards are as follows:

1. Hinder growth

If the sponges grow on the surface of the water, it will hinder the temperature requirement for the growth of rice and lotus root, reduce the water temperature and mud temperature, and be disadvantageous to the growth of plants or cultured products. If a large number of sponges cover the bottom of the pond, the farmed fish, shrimp and crabs will be entangled, affecting their foraging, and then reducing the survival rate; decomposition will consume dissolved oxygen in the water, resulting in anoxic death of fish, shrimp, crabs and so on.

2. Cause diseases

If the sponges grow on the water surface, compete for nutrition and consume oxygen, the roots of rice and lotus roots will be poisoned by hydrogen sulfide and biogas due to poor gas exchange, resulting in physiological diseases such as blackening and rotting roots; if attached to the plant, it will cause moisture on the surface of the plant, hinder the permeability of the plant, lead to poor breathing, and cause some diseases.

3. The water quality is deteriorating

If the sponges grow too much, it will make the aquatic products mildew and odor, and reduce the quality of the water; and a large number of growing sponges form a layer of green scum on the surface of the water body, which will make the water quality become turbid and the transparency will be significantly reduced; sponges can also secrete and release toxic and harmful substances, resulting in a decline in the quality of water.
