Ligustrum lucidum plants have luxuriant branches and uniform trees in four seasons, so privet is often used in garden construction. Strong adaptability, low requirements for the growth environment, resistance to pruning, and very easy to reproduce, so privet can also be used to make potted plants for viewing. So, how to grow privet? What do you need to pay attention to in the process of planting privet?

How to grow privet

Generally for sowing propagation, cutting propagation. But the most commonly used is sowing and reproduction. It can be sowed in spring or in winter.

First, spring sowing

1. Seed collection. Privet seeds usually mature at the end of each year, that is, between November and December, which is the best time to collect seeds. First of all, you need to choose a privet tree that looks strong, tree-shaped and looks good in all aspects. The seeds collected from such privet trees are stronger when they grow out. Then you need to cut off the ear with scissors, remove the fruit, then put it in water for a week or so and then remove the peel, then wash it and dry it. After that, the seeds need to be wet hidden, and then they can be soaked in 40 ℃ of water in March and April of the following year.

2. The planting environment. First of all, you need to choose a leeward, sunny place with good drainage and irrigation conditions. If you want to choose a fertile soil with more organic matter, you can generally use a mixture of sandy loam and light clay, which is conducive to seed germination.

3. The method of sowing. Sow the seeds directly on the planting site, and then cover with a layer of soil. A certain amount of fertilizer can be applied, mainly manure, which can not only increase the nutrients during seed development, but also promote the germination of its seeds.

II. Winter sowing

Privet seeds can also be sown in winter. In general, it is done before freezing in winter, and there is no need for other treatment of the seeds. The planting method is the same as spring sowing.

Planting methods and matters needing attention of privet

I. selection of land and land preparation

The sunny sloping land should be sandy loam with fertile soil, loose texture, deep soil layer and good drainage. After selecting the land, ploughing in autumn, and applying sufficient fertilizer, raking fine and leveling to make a seedbed with a width of 1 meter and a height of 13-15 cm.

II. Planting methods

1. Sowing seeds

Seed treatment: harvest the seeds after maturity, rub the seed coat, wash, dry, wet sand layer. Soak the seeds in warm water before sowing, accelerate the germination, and sow the seeds after germination.

Sowing method: strip sowing and sowing are available, and strip sowing is better. Generally sowing in late December, ditching in the border bed, ditch distance of 15 cm, ditch depth of 4-6 cm, seeds will be evenly sowed in the ditch, covering soil thickness of 1-1.5 cm.

2. Transplant

Usually from February to March or October to November. According to the row, the plant distance is 3.5-4 meters, the depth of the hole is 40 cm, the base fertilizer is applied at the bottom of the hole, and the soil is added to 15-20 cm, and then the 1-2-year-old seedlings (the big seedlings should carry soil and cut off some branches and leaves to improve the survival rate) are planted in the hole and compacted with soil. In addition, cuttings and striping propagation methods can also be used, which are generally carried out in spring and autumn.

III. Field management

1. After the seedlings are unearthed, the seedlings should be loosened and weeded in time to prevent grass wasteland. When the seedling height is 10-13 cm, loosen soil and weed for the first time, and then 2-3 times a year; root culture should be combined with loosening soil and weeding in winter and summer. The transplanting site should be watered when the weather is dry. 2. After topdressing and transplanting, topdressing twice a year, the first time before the Beginning of Autumn, the second time before and after the Beginning of Winter, organic fertilizer is better, and the amount of fertilizer application depends on plant growth.

3. Starting from the second year after the survival of the young tree, pruning once in late winter and early spring, pruning and shaping the withered branch, weak branch and sprouting branch of the root should be reshaped with wood support to form a crown step by step; according to its growth situation, the adult tree should be pruned once a year to facilitate directional growth, ventilation and light transmission and promote the development of fruit branches.

Prevention and control of diseases and insect pests of privet

1. Disease

Rust: spray 20% verapamil EC 400x at the initial stage of the disease; or 50% carbendazim wettable powder 800x, or 1 ∶ 1 ∶ 200Bordeaux solution. During the onset of the disease, spray 2500-4000 times of the wettable spray every 15 days or so.

2. Insect pests

① privet moth: remove the screen on privet plants at any time to destroy pupae, eggs and larvae; in the larval stage, spray 1000-1500 times of trichlorfon.

② wax beetle: combined with pruning, remove part of the dense branches, scrape off the dense branches with bamboo slices and other materials; after the nymphs hatch, 1000 times the mixture of 0.5kg imidophos EC can be used when the nymphs hatch.

④ longicorn beetles: kill adults in time; spray 50% fenitrothion EC 40 times into the wormhole in the egg, larva and adult stage to poison the larvae that enter the xylem.

Matters needing attention in pruning privet

The main results are as follows: 1. when privet is pruned in summer, it is mainly to cut short the branches, cut short the competitive branches of the main branches of privet, and cut off the trunk and the sprouting branches on the roots.

2. Winter pruning should be cut short, but when leaving buds, the direction should be opposite to that of the previous year. After winter pruning, the main branches of the lower trunk of privet should be cut off year by year.

3. For many years of negligent pruning of privet plants, reasonable pruning should be carried out. Keep the main branch, and the rest of the branches should be cut short to keep them big and small under the crown.

Privet, also known as ash tree, general book, holly and other names, can grow up to about 25 meters, bark is generally gray, leaves are generally oval, looks very exquisite and lovely. Therefore, in family breeding, we should pay attention to pruning branches and leaves, showing the most beautiful side of privet.
