Grape is one of the oldest fruit tree species in the world. With the development of agricultural technology, most grapevines are propagated by cuttings. So, how many years of cutting grapes bear fruit?

First, how many years of cutting grapes bear fruit?

The grape cuttings can bear fruit in 2 years, and the third year begins to enter the full fruiting period. Grape cuttage is usually carried out between June and July, cutting with lignified shoots as cuttings, cutting off the upper leaves, the lower part cut into an oblique mouth, inserted in the soil, slightly filled and watered thoroughly, and can take root in about half a month.

Second, the propagation method of grape.

(1) cutting propagation

This method is the simplest and most commonly used method for grape reproduction. Grape stem segment is easy to root. Cut mature annual branches into stem segments with 1-4 buds and insert them into soil. Under suitable temperature conditions, grape stems will take root and sprout and grow into cuttings. Because the cuttings are self-rooted seedlings, they are generally resistant to cold and disease.

(2) Graft propagation

This is also a common method of grape reproduction. In this method, the excellent varieties are grafted on the rootstocks with strong resistance, and the two are combined to form new plants, which are called grafted seedlings. Because the grafted seedlings use rootstocks with strong disease resistance or cold resistance, the seedlings have strong resistance and adaptability, so they are suitable for use in root nodule aphid infected areas and cold areas, and sometimes used for variety renewal. But the propagation technique is more difficult and laborious than cuttings.

(3) striping propagation

It is generally used in some varieties which are difficult to root in cuttage propagation. The method is to press the exuberant branches that do not leave the female parent under the soil to promote each bud on the branch to germinate and take root to form a new plant. The propagation speed of this method is also fast, and it is often used in the transformation of old vineyards.

(4) tissue culture

This is a method of rapid asexual reproduction, which is very effective for the expansion and promotion of newly cultivated or newly introduced varieties. In this method, the stem tip or stem segment of grape was inoculated on the artificial culture medium under aseptic condition to develop into plantlets, which is called test-tube plantlets. The propagation speed of this method is fast, and tens of thousands of seedlings can be produced by a stem tip or stem segment in a year. However, this method is highly technical and requires some equipment.

Grape varieties can not be propagated by seeds, because breeding with seeds will produce a wide range of variations and can not maintain the good characteristics of the original varieties.
