Turmeric has high medicinal and economic value, it can break blood stasis, open menstruation and relieve pain, mainly treat chest and abdomen pain, shoulder and arm pain, heartache, postpartum blood pain, initial onset of ringworm, irregular menstruation, amenorrhea, fall injury, and can extract yellow food dyestuff. Curcumin can be used as analytical chemical reagent. So, how many years can turmeric be planted and harvested?

How many years can turmeric be planted and harvested?

Turmeric usually takes two years to be planted before it can be harvested. It is suitable for growing in a warm and humid climate with plenty of sunshine and rainfall.

Second, the planting method of turmeric

1. Soil preparation and fertilization

It is appropriate to choose sandy loam soil with deep soil layer, loose and fertile soil and good drainage. After selecting the planting land, clean up the residual weeds in the field and turn the soil deeply. When ploughing, 3000 kg of livestock compost and 50 kg of superphosphate per mu are applied as base fertilizer, or chemical fertilizer can be used instead of 90-100kg high potassium compound fertilizer per mu. Mix fertilizer and soil evenly and rake fine and smooth.

2. Sowing seeds

Turmeric is a vegetative propagation based on rhizome, and turmeric with strong growth, full rhizome and dense buds is selected as seed. When sowing, the selected rhizome is cut into small segments of 2-3cm, and each segment requires 1-2 buds, so that it can germinate normally. Hole sowing or furrow sowing can be used when sowing, sowing time is from October to November, the row spacing of plants is controlled by 20 × 15cm, and 6000-8000 seeds are needed per mu.

3. Ploughing and weeding

The seedlings begin to sprout 25-30 days after sowing. When the seedlings grow above 10cm, artificial weeding should be carried out. When weeding, it is recommended to pull out the weeds directly by hand, do not use insecticides, so as not to cause seedling death. Turmeric is active from July to August every year, so it is necessary to cultivate the soil in time, generally up to about 10cm, so as not to cause plant lodging, soil cultivation or weeding, also do not use weeding chicken, can be cut with a knife.

4. Fertilizer and water management

Turmeric should be fertilized three times a year, the first time in the seedling stage, when nitrogen fertilizer is mainly applied, 30-40 kg per mu should be applied, and direct contact with plants should be avoided so as not to affect plant growth. Generally, watering after fertilization can speed up the absorption of fertilizer.

The second time is from May to June, when it is the peak season for plant growth, so there is a greater demand for fertility, so it is necessary to topdressing in time to provide plant growth. At this time, the application of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium compound fertilizer, generally about 80 kilograms per mu, should be applied while covering the soil to prevent the loss of fertility.

The third time in July, can be combined with ploughing and soil cultivation, this fertilization is very important, related to the yield of turmeric, the application of organic fertilizer 1-5 kg or compound fertilizer 0.1 kg per plant can also be combined, but we should pay attention to the supply of potash fertilizer. Potash fertilizer can improve the yield and quality of turmeric.

Turmeric likes to be wet but afraid of stagnant water, so it should be watered more in drought, and drainage measures should be taken in the rainy season to avoid rotting roots. Watering can be carried out together with fertilization.
