Last Updated: 2024/11/06, Peanuts are planted all over the north and south of our country, and they are more important oil crops and cash crops, which can have higher economic benefits, but sometimes peanuts will appear empty shell phenomenon, affecting the yield of peanuts. So why do peanuts have empty shells? What are the solutions?

Peanut is planted in the north and south of our country. It is an important oil crop and cash crop. It can have relatively high economic benefits. However, sometimes peanuts will appear empty shell phenomenon, which will affect the yield of peanuts. So why would peanuts be empty? What are the solutions?

1. Reasons for variety

Peanut varieties are also one of the reasons for its empty shell, the general empty shell peanuts are large peanut series varieties, these varieties in the planting of large and heavy grains, and the corresponding nutrients required are also more, so easy to cause empty shell; and small peanut pearl series is rarely empty shell phenomenon.

Solution: When planting, try to choose small peanut pearl series varieties. If it is a large peanut variety, it is recommended to plant it, reduce planting density, strengthen fertilizer and water management, and ensure sufficient nutrients for its growth.

2, calcium deficiency

The main reason for peanut empty shell is caused by calcium deficiency. If the peanut is deficient in calcium during pod development, it will affect the development of seeds and form empty shell. Calcium deficiency is sometimes caused by many factors, including soil and artificial management.

Soil: The soil is too poor, the fertility is insufficient, and no calcium fertilizer or organic fertilizer is applied, resulting in insufficient income, resulting in calcium deficiency, there are acid soils such as latosol and yellow brown soil, the activity of calcium content is low, and calcium deficiency is easy.

Climate: In the case of high temperature and rainy climate during planting, the calcium element in the soil will be rapidly lost, and soil water shortage or waterlogging will also affect the root system for calcium absorption.

Improper fertilization: Some farmers blindly apply nitrogen fertilizer in pursuit of yield, while ignoring the application of other fertility, resulting in excessive nitrogen in the soil, resulting in excessive growth of peanut plants, and underground parts due to lack of nutrition resulting in empty shells. In addition, boron deficiency can also cause peanut shell, and excessive potassium application can also cause shell.

3. Prevention and control measures

Calcium deficiency should be timely fertilization calcium supplement, soil can be applied with organic fertilizer, 3000-4000 kg of organic fertilizer per mu, to ensure the full supply of nutrients. When topdressing, calcium superphosphate is applied, which not only contains phosphorus element, but also rich in calcium element, which can increase the two nutrients of calcium and phosphorus in the soil. Generally, 30 kg per mu is applied as base fertilizer, and 10-20 kg per mu is applied in the later topdressing. Boron fertilizer is sprayed on the leaves once during flowering and pod-bearing to promote flowering, improve grain weight and increase yield. Potassium fertilizer should be applied deeply to prevent excessive potassium in the fruit layer and affect calcium absorption. It can be cultivated in the middle and deeply.
