In ancient times, Zhou Dunyi's description of the lotus "coming out of the mud but not dyed, Zhuo Qinglian but not demon" in the theory of lotus makes the lotus's position in the literary world extremely firm. Today, as a plant cultivated in China since the Zhou Dynasty, the lotus is still planted by a large number of people. What is the method of growing lotus? When is the best time to grow it? What are the water depth requirements?

I. planting methods of lotus

1. Water quality

Lotus is an aquatic plant, no matter which growth period, water demand is very large. In the early stage of growth, the water layer should be controlled around 3cm, and the depth of water is not conducive to the increase of soil temperature. If tap water is used, it is best to put it in another tank and bask in it for one or two days. Summer is the peak period for the growth of lotus, so there must be no shortage of water in the basin. After the beginning of winter, the basin soil should also be kept moist to prevent lotus root from drying up due to lack of water.

2. Fertilization

The fertilizer of lotus is mainly phosphorus and potassium fertilizer, supplemented by nitrogen fertilizer. If the soil is more fertile, there is no need to apply fertilizer throughout the year. Rotten cake fertilizer and chicken, duck and goose manure are the most ideal fertilizers, which can be applied in small pots, but only 1-2 taels in large pots. Excessive application is easy to cause fertilizer damage, and fertilizer should be fully mixed with the soil to facilitate the absorption of lotus roots. In summer, if you find the leaves curled up and yellowing, you can mix 0.5 grams of urea in the mud, mix them well, rub them into 10 grams of mud balls, and apply them to the soil in the center of the basin for 7 days.

3. Overwintering

After the beginning of winter, the basin can be put indoors or buried under the permafrost. The north of the Yellow River should not only be buried under the permafrost but also covered with agricultural film to keep the basin soil moist throughout the winter.

Second, when is the best time to plant lotus

1. Seed breeding

If the lotus is planted in the way of seed breeding, the concave end of the seed should be worn out in May-June, and then soaked to raise seedlings. To keep the water quality clear, once the water quality appears turbid, the water should be changed. After sowing for about 7 days, it can sprout. After two weeks, it can take root and transplant. When transplanting, make sure that one plant is planted in each pot, the water layer should be shallow, and the lotus leaves should not be submerged in water. About 90% can blossom in that year, but not many in that year.

2. Planting with separate lotus roots

If the lotus is planted in separate lotus roots, choose the best time from mid-March to mid-April. Early planting will have cold air invasion, vulnerable to freezing damage, the northern region in case of cold spell can be covered with transparent agricultural film.

Before planting, the basin mud should be mixed into a paste, and when planting, the top of the lotus root is 20 degrees oblique to insert the mud along the edge of the basin, the bowl lotus is about 5 cm deep, the large lotus flower is about 10 cm deep, the head is low and the tail is high, and the tail is half warped to prevent the lotus root tail from entering water.

After planting, put the pot in the sun to make the surface soil crack, so that the lotus root is completely bonded with the soil, then add a small amount of water, wait for the bud to grow, gradually deepen the water level, and finally maintain the water layer of 3-5 cm.

3. What are the water depth requirements for lotus planting

The water requirement of lotus depends on its varieties. Large plant-shaped varieties such as ancient lotus and red thousand-leaf are relatively deep, but not more than 1.7 meters. Small and medium-sized plants are only suitable for a water depth of 20-60 cm. At the same time, the lotus is very sensitive to water loss. As long as it is not irrigated for 3 hours in summer, the lotus leaves in the water tank will wither. If the water stops for one day, the lotus leaves will become charred and the buds will wither. In addition, the lotus likes light, is not tolerant to shade, and needs full light during its growth period, so it will show a strong phototaxis when it grows in the semi-shade.

Lotus is full of treasures, both ornamental, edible and medicinal value, interested friends can try to plant.
