On June 8, 2020, the Ministry of Agriculture and Village issued a notice on the confirmation of super rice varieties in 2020, saying that 11 varieties were confirmed as super rice varieties in 2020, and another 10 varieties of super rice were disqualified. What does super rice mean? What are the confirmed varieties in 2020?

What do you mean by super rice?

In a broad sense, super rice means that the main characters such as yield, rice quality and resistance are significantly higher than those of existing varieties (combinations). In a narrow sense, it refers to a new variety (combination) with a substantial increase in yield on the basis of resistance and rice quality similar to that of the control variety (combination). General super rice refers to the narrow concept, that is, super high-yield rice. In the 1980s, the Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries and the International Rice Research Institute successively launched super rice projects, but they were not really successful. China came from behind to catch up, launched the "China Super Rice breeding" project in 1996, and bred a number of varieties with independent intellectual property rights.

What are the super rice varieties confirmed in 2020?

According to the measures for the confirmation of Super Rice varieties (Agricultural Section (2008) No. 38), 11 varieties such as Suken 118,143and so on are confirmed as super rice varieties in 2020 after recommendation and evaluation by experts (Annex 1). Ten super rice varieties including Fengyou 299, Liangyou Peijiu, Nei 2 you 6, Zhenxin 688, Ⅱ Youhang 2, Rongyou 3, Yangjing 4038, Wuyunjing 24, Chujing 28 and Jinyou 785 were cancelled because the extension area did not meet the requirements. At present, 133 super rice varieties have been confirmed by our ministry, and the specific varieties are as follows:

1. Suken 118

Suken 118 is a japonica conventional rice with a growth period of 150 days. It is suitable to be planted in Yanghilly area of Suzhong and Ningzhen in Jiangsu Province.

2. Middle group 143

The middle group 143is indica conventional rice with a growth period of 112.1, which is suitable for planting early rice in Zhejiang Province.

3. Jiafengyou No. 2

Jiafengyou 2 is a kind of indica three-line hybrid rice with a growth period of 144.7 days, which is suitable for single cropping indica rice in Zhejiang Province.

4. Huazhe you 71

Huazhe you 71 is an indica three-line hybrid rice with a growth period of 136.9 days, which is suitable for single cropping indica rice in Zhejiang Province.

5. Funongyou 676

Funongyou 676 is a kind of indica three-line hybrid rice with a growth period of 144.0 days. It is suitable to be planted as medium rice in the area with light incidence of rice blast in Fujian Province.

6. Ji Youhang 1573

Jiyouhang 1573 is a kind of indica three-line hybrid rice with a growth period of 119.6 days. It is suitable to be planted as late rice in the area with light incidence of rice blast in Jiangxi Province.

7. Taiyou 871

Taiyou 871 is a kind of indica three-line hybrid rice with a growth period of 121.4 days. It is suitable to be planted in areas with light incidence of rice blast in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River in Jiangxi Province.

8. Longfengyou 826

Longfengyou 826 is a kind of indica three-line hybrid rice with a growth period of 115.4 days. It is suitable to be planted as late rice in the areas where photosensitive varieties are suitable for planting in southern and central Guangxi. It is not suitable to plant rice blast in the area where rice blast occurs again.

9. Jingyou Huazhen

Jingyouhuazhen is a kind of indica three-line hybrid rice with a growth period of 158.4 days. it is suitable to be planted as one-cropping medium rice in Pingba hilly rice region of Sichuan Province, Guizhou Province (except Wuling Mountain area), low and middle altitude indica rice area of Yunnan Province, Chongqing (except Wuling Mountain area) and southern Shaanxi Province. It is not suitable to plant rice blast in the area where rice blast occurs again.

10. Yongyou 7850

Yongyou 7850 is an indica-japonica hybrid rice with a growth period of 154.7 days. It is suitable to be planted as single-cropping late rice in Zhejiang Province, Shanghai, southern Jiangsu Province, Anhui Province and Hubei Province.

11. Jingliangyou 1988

Jingliangyou 1988 is an indica two-line hybrid rice with a growth period of 135.8 days. It is suitable to be planted as one-cropping medium rice in Hubei Province (except Wuling Mountain area), Hunan Province (except Wuling Mountain area), Jiangxi Province, Anhui Province, Yangtze River Basin of Jiangsu Province, Zhejiang Province, Northern Fujian Province and Southern Henan Province.

Generally speaking, super rice is rice whose yield, rice quality and resistance are significantly higher than those of existing varieties (combinations). At present, 11 varieties have been confirmed in 2020, and one of the above 11 varieties can be selected for planting.
