The country's total cotton output continued to be reduced by 5.605 million tons in 2015.
According to the national cotton production data released by the National Bureau of Statistics, the country's total cotton output in 2015 was 5.605 million tons, a decrease of 574000 tons or 9.3 percent compared with 2014.
The decrease in cotton production is mainly due to the decrease in area. In 2015, the sown area of cotton in China was 3799.0 thousand hectares (56.984 million mu), a decrease of 423.4 thousand hectares (6.351 million mu), or 10.0 percent, compared with 2014. Due to the reduction in sown area, the output was reduced by 619000 tons. From a regional point of view, the sown area of cotton in Xinjiang decreased by 49.0 thousand hectares (735000 mu), or 2.5 percent, compared with 2014; in other areas, it decreased by 374.4 thousand hectares (5.616 million mu), a decrease of 16.5 percent, and the decrease was larger than that of the previous year.
From a regional point of view, the main cotton production in the Yellow River and Yangtze River basins has been reduced more. Among them, the cotton area in the Yellow River basin decreased by 182.9 thousand hectares (2.744 million mu), or 14.8 percent; the per hectare yield decreased by 30.5kg (2.03kg / mu), down 2.8 percent; and the total output decreased by 231000 tons, or 17.2 percent. The cotton area in the Yangtze River basin decreased by 170.5 hectares (2.558 million mu), or 17.8 percent, but the per hectare yield increased by 63.3kg (4.2kg / mu), an increase of 5.8 percent, resulting in a decrease of 136000 tons or 13.1 per cent in total output.
The status of Xinjiang's main producing areas has been further consolidated. Xinjiang's cotton output in 2015 was 3.503 million tons, accounting for 62.5 percent of the country, an increase of 3.0 percent over 2014, and the regional advantage of cotton production was further enhanced. Among them, the cotton sown area in Xinjiang accounted for 50.1 percent of the country, an increase of 3.9 percentage points, and the per hectare yield was 1839.6 kg (122.6 kg / mu), higher than the national average of 24.6%.
