Do you know Taizao Huali pumpkin? Today I'd like to introduce two new varieties of pumpkins to you. Let's take a look at them together.

As the virus disease of pumpkin is becoming more and more serious, Hualien Agricultural Reform Farm and Asian vegetable-World vegetable Center have formally cooperated in the selection and observation of virus-resistant pumpkin strains since 1991. The disease resistance of African disease-resistant wild pumpkin was introduced into traditional papaya-type pumpkin by traditional backcross breeding, so that the new variety has the flavor of native pumpkin and the disease resistance of African disease-resistant wild species.

The first pumpkin "Hualien Yazu No. 1-Taishan" (Huaya No. 1) is resistant to dwarf pumpkin yellowing mosaic virus disease and cucumber mosaic virus disease. After character verification, it applied for variety rights, and finally approved the variety rights in May this year.

At the same time, Hualien Agricultural Reform Farm continued to research and develop a first generation hybrid variety "Hualien Yazu No.2-Youwang" (Huaya No.2), which has just completed the character test this year and will be sent to the Agriculture and Food Department to apply for variety rights. Huaya No.2 has a high yield and is also resistant to two kinds of viruses.

These two varieties can resist two kinds of viruses to reduce pesticide control, and are very suitable for organic and friendly agricultural cultivation. After technical transformation, they are expected to be on the market next year.

Researchers at Hualien Agricultural Reform Farm said: although traditional Chinese pumpkins are more heat-resistant than Western pumpkins, the planting period is also concentrated from October to February because of viral diseases, so the yield is concentrated from February to May. Because the rich price is low, when it is planted in Chen Defu's demonstration field in mid-March, one month later this year, it can be seen that Huaya No. 1 and Huaya No. 2 have better antiviral ability than the control varieties. Therefore, it can be planted in mid-March or even in April, and can be harvested from early July to mid-August, when the price of pumpkins is better.

As long as we pay attention to the prevention and control of plum rainy season blight and melon fruit flies at flowering stage, the yield can reach more than 32 tons per hectare, while organic cultivation can reach more than 20 tons. Among them, Huaya No. 1 is suitable for technology transfer as the breeding parent of the seed and seedling company, and Huaya No. 2 is popularized for farmers. After the completion of the technology transfer, farmers can buy seeds directly from the seed and seedling company.

Chen Defu said that at the beginning of this year, he learned that pumpkins would be planted in mid-March, so he used the fields where tomatoes were planted in the previous phase to grow pumpkins without applying base fertilizer. When each plant blossomed, only additional Taiwan fertilizer 43, 10 to 15 grams, was added to each plant during flowering. The improved farm changed the incense to kill melon flies every 3 to 4 weeks, and only sprayed it twice during the plum rainy season. The yield was very high and it was easy to manage.

The farmers who participated in the viewing party responded very well and thought that the two new varieties were delicious and could be planted in late spring, and they could be harvested in July, when the price was higher, and their shapes were oval and Wendan-shaped, which were easier to box than traditional papaya-shaped pumpkins. I believe they can be sold at a good price in the auction market.
