The Hualien District Agricultural improvement Farm of the Agricultural Commission of the Executive Yuan and the world-class Asian vegetable-World vegetable Center have developed a new pumpkin disease-resistant variety Hualien Yazu No.2-Youwang, which can resist two kinds of viruses. one of the parents is the strongly virus-resistant variety "Hualien Yazu No.1-Taishan", so "Youwang" can reduce pesticide control and is very suitable for organic and friendly agricultural cultivation. At the end of last year, the technology was transferred to seedling companies for production, and commercial seeds will soon be produced and packaged and put on the market by the end of March this year. Farmers who tried out planting last year all said that the performance was good and the yield was high. Pumpkin cultivation skills are what we need to know.

As the virus disease of pumpkin is becoming more and more serious, Hualien Agricultural Reform Farm and Asian vegetables have formally cooperated in the selection and observation of virus-resistant pumpkin strains since 1991, crossing the disease resistance of African disease-resistant wild pumpkins with traditional backcross breeding methods. Introduction of traditional papaya-type pumpkin, so that the new varieties have both native pumpkin flavor, as well as the disease resistance of African disease-resistant wild species.

The pumpkin "Hualien Yazu No.1-Taishan", which was first bred, had resistance to "dwarf pumpkin yellow mosaic virus disease" and "cucumber mosaic virus disease". After character verification, the variety right was finally approved in May 106. At the same time, the Hualien Agricultural Reform Farm continues to use "Mount Tai" as its parent to develop a hybrid variety "Hualien Yazu No.2-Youwang." it just completed the character test last year and sent it to the Agriculture and Food Department to apply for variety rights. "Youwang" has high yield and resistance to two kinds of viruses, so it is very suitable for organic and friendly cultivation.

"Youwang" creeping cultivation has a strong growth potential, and disease resistance and drug reduction have the opportunity to become a new force in organic and friendly cultivation.

Wang Qizheng, a researcher at Hualien Agricultural Reform Farm, said that although traditional Chinese pumpkins are more heat-resistant than Western pumpkins, because of viral diseases, planting is also concentrated from October to February of the following year, so the yield is concentrated from February to May, and the price is lower during the peak period.

The experiment was postponed for a month. When it was planted in the farmers' demonstration field in mid-March, it can be seen that the anti-virus ability of "Youwang" is better than that of the control varieties, so it can be planted in mid-March or even in April, and can be harvested from early July to mid-August, where the price of pumpkins is better. As long as we pay attention to the prevention and control of plum blight in the rainy season and the control of melon fruit flies in flowering, the yield per hectare can reach more than 32 tons, while organic cultivation can reach more than 20 tons.

The farmers who took part in the trial planting of "Youwang" last year responded very well and thought that the new variety was delicious, and it could be planted in late spring and harvested in July, when the price was higher, and its shape was Wendan-shaped, which was easier to pack than traditional papaya-shaped pumpkins. I believe it can be sold at a good price in the auction market. Farmers can buy "Youwang" seeds directly from Xinhua Seedling Company, the seedling company of Hualien Agricultural Reform Farm.
