Avocado has a good growing prospect. Avocado has become popular in recent years. It is not only regarded as a "super food", but also has high nutritional value. Therefore, it has become a "benefactor" for many people who advocate healthy eating. However, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has earlier called for washing and peeling avocados before eating, because listeria has been detected in avocados and poses a threat to human health.

Listeria in 18% of peel

A report released by the FDA at the end of last year showed that between 2014 and 2016, they collected 1,615 samples of avocado in the United States and imported avocados for testing. Of the 361 avocado peel samples, 64 (about 18%) tested positive for Listeria.

Pregnant women are at high risk

Listeriosis is an infectious disease that can be contracted by eating food contaminated with listeria. Listeria is normally found in soil, water, decaying plants and animal intestines. Because this disease can lead to death at its worst. Pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems are more susceptible to infection.

In particular, the immune system is weak during pregnancy, so pregnant women are at high risk. Listeria can be transmitted to the fetus through the placenta and may cause miscarriage, premature delivery, underweight and even death. Other fetuses infected with listeria at a later stage may also develop mental retardation, paralysis, blindness, brain, heart and kidney damage after birth.

Wash before peeling

When the avocado is cut open with a knife or cleaned with other utensils, bacteria and contaminants may be transferred from the knife to the flesh. Therefore, FDA recommends that avocados should be washed and peeled with water before peeling or cutting.

Listeria can also spread from contaminated food to refrigerators and other places where food is stored, and the FDA recommends immediately cleaning out spilled or leaked food or liquids in refrigerators and regularly washing the interior with warm soapy water.
