Grapefruit varieties distinguish Wendan / Hongwendan / Shaddock. What are the characteristics of the three grapefruit varieties?

Summer is almost over and a cool breeze begins to blow. Entering the middle of the eighth month of the lunar calendar, what I look forward to most is the Mid-Autumn Festival. People say that when people are reunited with a full moon, it is the happiest thing to enjoy the full moon and eat Wendan with their families. The record of growing grapefruit in Taiwan is very early, which can be traced back to 1694, and there are many kinds of grapefruit, including Wendan, Hong Wendan, white pomelo, and red pomelo. Wait. Today I would like to introduce to you the characteristics and differences among Wendan, Red Wendan and White Pomelo.

Wen Dan

Wendan is the earliest of the three kinds of grapefruit and will begin to flourish around the first ten days of September in the Gregorian calendar (around the eighth month of the lunar calendar). However, the weather this year (2015) is relatively early, so Wendan is mostly harvested early, and many farmers' Wendan have been sold out before the Mid-Autumn Festival.

Tainan Ma Dou is one of the largest producing areas of Wendan in Taiwan. Many Ma Dou Wendan can be seen on the market every year during the Mid-Autumn Festival. In recent years, Wendan from Hualien, Hegang, and other places have made a name for themselves in the grapefruit market. In fact, Wendan is not only good quality, as long as there is proper management, care, can still cultivate sweet and delicious Wendan.

The fruit shape of Wendan is conical or pear-shaped. The peel is light green, but it turns yellowish green after ripening, which is also the time when Wendan has the best flavor.

Red Wendan

Red Wendan is rare in the market. The oil bag on the peel is thick, and it was called "sesame bean red pomelo" in the early days. It is easy to be mixed with another kind of red pomelo with thin oil package and round and flat body. Its fruit is much larger than the average Wen Dan, and the fruit is even as high as 20 centimeters. The flesh is bright red, like a ruby; the meat is thick and juicy; the taste is sour and sweet, which makes people want to eat it again. It is vitamin c-rich fruit.

Xi Shi pomelo

The fruit shape of grapefruit is oblate and is a variety introduced from Thailand. The skin is yellowish green, especially the velvet layer is pink, and the flesh is light pink. Just like a shy beauty, probably because it has the title of "grapefruit". The delivery period is about October to November. The pulp has a sweet and sour flavor.

Unlike Wendan, it doesn't take a long time to say goodbye to grapefruit. Just wait for the skin to soften and you can eat it.
