"Tainong No. 1 Jinxiang" citrus has the characteristics of softer pulp, higher sugar and acid content, stronger aroma, dark orange juice and high juice percentage than ordinary sweet oranges. It can be developed into Fresh Juice or fresh varieties. The listing of this new variety will provide consumers with a wide range of new choices.
At present, the cultivated area of citrus in Taiwan is 33,000 hectares. In recent years, the cultivated area of the main cultivated varieties including Ponkan, barrel mandarin, willow orange and Wendan has gradually decreased, while the cultivated area of mixed oranges has gradually increased from 1398 hectares in 1990 to 4418 hectares in 2006. Mixed citrus is mainly Maogu, Minnie grapefruit, welfare monk, lime, navel orange and other emerging varieties, indicating that emerging varieties are more easily welcomed by the market.
There are 165 citrus varieties and lines preserved in Chiayi Branch of Agricultural Experimental Institute, which can provide a good basis for cross breeding. Using seedless bucket mandarin from our province and pineapple sweet orange, one of the main sweet orange varieties in Florida, USA, pineapple sweet orange was pollinated in seedless bucket mandarin since 1984. after 23 years of experiment, Taiwan's first new hybrid variety, "Tainong No. 1 Jinxiang", was bred, and the variety right was obtained in September 1997.
This variety has open branches and easy tree shape management. it shows high yield in Meishan of Chiayi, Dongshan of Tainan and Chiayi Branch of Agricultural Test Institute, but the fruit phenomenon is not obvious in the next year. The peel is orange to red-orange and the flesh is orange. High sugar and acid content and strong aroma. The sugar content is 12 mi 15 degrees and the acid content is 0.9 mi 1.2%. The juice rate is 50%, 55% (50% of the world's major citrus juice varieties, 40% of orange juice, 40% of orange juice). The pulp is softer and easier to extract juice than ordinary sweet oranges, which is very suitable for household electric juicer. The fruit juice is dark orange, darker than the late Lunsia and willow oranges, and can be developed into Fresh Juice or fresh varieties. The flesh of this variety is soft and the pericarp is tough. The fresh eater's fruit should be cut across and then cut into several slices. The number of seeds is about 10 to 15, and the mature period is in January in the southern region. There is no problem of overlap between flowering and harvest in late Lunxia.
