Humans have been growing grapes for thousands of years, and there are different ways of eating grapes all over the world. Grapes have always been used to match cheese, make jams, extract fruit juices and make wine. Today, there are more than 10, 000 kinds of grapes, of which 1300 are wines.

Needless to say, the fruit of this round and plump grape family belongs to berries, while blackberries, raspberries and strawberries are not (but this is another article). Here is to introduce you to the common grape varieties and eating methods on the market.

Jufeng grape KYOHO

Japanese fruit growers cultivated Jufeng grapes with purple-blue American Concord grapes at the beginning of the 20th century, and now they have become the most popular grape variety in Japan, accounting for 1/3 of all Japanese grape production. The skin of Jufeng grape is dark purple (nearly black), shiny and slightly bitter, so it is usually eaten after peeling. The grape itself is large, juicy and sweet, and generally enjoys the fruit directly.

Concord grape CONCORD

Dark purple, close to soft blue, with a skin like blueberries. Concord grape is one of the most widely eaten varieties on the market because it is easy to peel and can easily get rid of the acidity of grape skins. With a slight squeeze, the grape skin will burst to reveal the sweet, juicy flesh, making Concord the most suitable grape variety for jellies, fruit juices, fruit tarts, sodas and candies. Sometimes it is also used to make Kosher certified wines.

Sauvignon Blanc grape SAUVIGNON BLANC

Sauvignon Blanc is a green grape variety from Bordeaux, France. Early-maturing grapes are suitable for making aromatic dry white wines. Today, this variety is grown in many wine regions around the world, including France, Chile, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. Sauvignon Blanc has fruity, grassy and tropical flavors, depending on the climate.

Delaware grape DELAWARE

Delaware ripens with a crimson skin and a soft touch. Although the skin is red, this grape is not used to make red wine, but is often used to make sweet wine, sparkling wine, rose wine and white wine. Like Concord grapes, Delaware is easy to peel.

Cat's eye grape NEW PIONE

Originated from Okayama Prefecture, the largest grape producer in Japan, Maoyan grape is a variety born after the mixture of Jufeng grape and Cannon Hall musk grape. Dark blue-purple grapes are fruity and full, with jelly-like pulp and sweet juicy fruit. Cat's Eye grapes, also known as Black Pearl, sell for as much as HK $200 for half a kilogram in some Japanese food markets.

Riesling grape RIESLING

Unlike Sauvignon or Chardonnay with green skins, Riesling grapes are white. Originating from the Rhine region of Germany, Riesling is famous for its floral fragrance, adding flavor to white wines. For the grapes made from Riesling, the most expensive is the late harvest sweet wine, which is delayed to allow the grapes to achieve higher maturity, sweetness and stronger flavor.

Moon grape MOON DROPS

Produced by The Grapery in Bakersfield, California, this legendary vineyard produces a variety of specialty grapes, including Tear Drops and Cotton Candy. Moon grape thin crisp skin, long fruit can be cut in half, seedless and juicy, crisp taste.
