Kumquat, you must have eaten this kind of fruit. Do you know that there is also a name of golden jujube that you don't know? Are mandarins and oranges grown in the same way? Let's have a look!

"Golden jujube" is a nickname for Kumqat in Ilan, which is oval in shape, like a golden jujube, beautiful and happy, so Ilan people call it "golden jujube".

Kumquat (Kumqat) is a small perennial evergreen tree of Rutaceae. Originated in Zhejiang, China, it was introduced to Taiwan by the Japanese "Tian Daishi" in 1906. Most of them are distributed in northern Taiwan, of which Ilan County has a cultivated area of about 280 hectares, accounting for more than 92% of the country, and is the main growing area of kumquat.

The Lanyang Plain is surrounded by mountains on three sides, the Pacific Ocean to the east and a lot of mountain wind, which leads to thick dew and cold climate, forming an excellent growth environment for golden citrus trees.

Propagation of Golden Citrus

Golden citrus trees are generally planted by grafting, with a life span of up to 40 years.

The process is as follows:

First, sowing: take the seeds of sour orange and sow them in the field or in a container filled with soil.

Second, grafting: as soon as the sour orange branch grows to about one centimeter thick, it will be cut off, leaving only 3-5 inch of the branch, and then the new buds of the kumquat tree will be cut off and grafted onto the truncated sour orange branch.

Third, transplant: kumquat will be replanted about a year after grafting. About 600 kumquat plants will be planted in each field. Only by careful and proper management, pruning, weeding, fertilization, spraying, and so on, can the growth quality and yield of kumquat be maintained.

Fourth, the flowering and fruiting of kumquat:

a. Golden citrus trees can blossom three to five times a year, the first time after Ching Ming Festival to the Dragon Boat Festival, the interval between each flowering is about 45 days, and the last one is between September and October.

b. The harvest time of kumquat can be as long as five months from November to March of the following year.

c. When kumquat blossoms for the first time and the fifth time, its fruit yield is less and its quality is poor.

d. During the non-fruit picking period, golden citrus trees need to be engaged in orchard management work such as fertilization, watering, pest control, weeding, pruning and so on, in order to improve yield and quality.
