Recently, in the process of market service, many pig farms have reported that the problem of watery diarrhea in piglets in the delivery room is prominent, resulting in the death of a large number of piglets. The basic vaccine immunization and health care of sows in pig farms are often relatively good, so what is the cause of this situation?

Here we start with an actual case of a pig farm.

This is a southern 200 sow farm. In mid-June 2020, the pig farm owner and market business manager reported that 2-3 days after the first birth of sows, newborn piglets developed severe watery diarrhea, severe dehydration, and the mortality rate of piglets was as high as 90%. The owner of the farm raised pigs for many years and had rich clinical experience. At that time, he mainly suspected three kinds of virus diseases, such as transmissible gastroenteritis, epidemic diarrhea and pseudorabies.

So the boss took measures such as oral epidemic diarrhea vaccine and intramuscular injection of pseudorabies vaccine to newborn piglets, and used rehydration plus antibiotics to prevent dehydration and secondary infection in sick piglets, but still could not stop the outbreak of diarrhea and the death of piglets. In desperation, the boss selected the diseased piglets and sent them to a third-party authoritative laboratory for testing, after gene sequencing. The diagnosis surprised the boss, not the three viral diseases he had imagined, but blue ear mutant infection.

After the pathogen test results were obtained, according to the actual situation of the pig farm, the following measures were taken:

(1) do not do emergency blue ear vaccine immunization

(2) all dehydrated piglets were eliminated, and piglets over 10 days old were weaned ahead of time, injected, and fed with warm water + high quality trough material + milk powder.

(3) the delivery room was thoroughly disinfected with 5% caustic soda and fumigated with peracetic acid and left vacant for 10 days.

(4) Kangzhiyuan was added to the whole herd of sows from the middle of July. The dosage of Kangzhiyuan was 4kg/t, 3kg/t and 2kg/t in the first 3 weeks, and Chuankexin (1.5kg/t) was used in the first 2 weeks. Sows were continuously fed with 2kg/t after 3 weeks of Kangzhiyuan.

Result

The pig farm is about to give birth to 12 sows 22 days after using this program, and the boss is still a little perturbed. From early August to mid-August, 12 litters of piglets in the delivery room no longer showed symptoms of watery diarrhea and dehydration. Watery diarrhea caused by variant blue ears was effectively controlled, the survival of piglets in the delivery room was significantly improved, and piglets were normally weaned at 22 days of age.

Summary:

Diarrhea of piglets in delivery room caused by blue ear disease is not uncommon in production, especially at present, many pig farms use three-yuan fat pig to sow, the activity of blue ear is increasing. At present, the effective way is: short-term suppression of antibiotics + non-specific immune regulation of traditional Chinese medicine, according to the activity of blue ear, consider blue ear vaccine immunity, especially in the coming autumn and winter, we need to pay more attention. It is strongly recommended that Chuankexin + Kangzhiyuan should be used to prevent and control the large perinatal period of sows, before and after immunization with blue ear vaccine, and during the maintenance period, so as to effectively suppress blue ears.
