Stop growing Korean vegetables! Since late August, the number of cabbage seedlings has frequently turned on red lights, and the mountains are growing cabbage peacefully at the same time. I am afraid we will encounter a strong explosion in November!

According to the statistics of the Agriculture and Food Administration, the number of cabbage seedlings supplied to Taiwan exceeded the warning value of 5.4 million in late August and early September, and 5.987 million in early September. The Agriculture and Food Administration said that alpine cabbage in Ilan County continued to be planted in the third phase of this year, while flat cabbage has been contracted by farmers and operators in a large area in the central producing area, and if there are no natural disasters, there will be overlap in harvesting time between flat and mountain cabbage in November, calling on farmers to carefully assess planting risks.

Alpine cabbage was originally produced only in summer, staggered with flat cabbage, but because of climate warming, the mountain can grow cabbage for longer and longer, the number of planting has also increased, and the area has been expanding. Once the alpine cabbage production season is delayed and overlaps with the flatland cabbage, it may become the trigger for the collapse in winter.

Since October, workers have been busy harvesting in the fields during the production of cabbage on flat land. (photo / Lin Xiejun) over the past 10 years, the annual output has increased by 100,000 metric tons, and the number of repeated cropping of alpine cabbage has increased.

Cabbage, commonly known as "cabbage", is the largest consumption of leafy vegetables in the Chinese people, so it is named "vegetable king". In the past ten years, the planting area and yield of cabbage in China have been increasing, from 7662 hectares and 320000 8331 metric tons in 2010 to 8392.76 hectares and 420000 7738 metric tons in 2019. Fu Li-Chung, head of the crop production Section of the Agriculture and Food Department, says that the consumption of cabbage in the Chinese people is growing, especially in the catering industry, such as hot pot restaurants and hot-fried restaurants.

According to the statistics of the Council of Agriculture, the five major producing areas of Korean food in Taiwan in 2019 are located in Yunlin County, Nantou County, Ilan County, Changhua County and Taichung City. Among them, the annual output of Nantou County and Ilan County has increased year after year. The planting area of Nantou County has doubled in the past 10 years, and the output of Ilan County surpassed Yunlin County in 2018 to become the county and city with the largest annual output of cabbage.

The cabbage from Yunlin County, Changhua County and Taichung City belongs to flat cabbage, which is mostly planted from August to September and harvested from October to November because of the hot summer. Nantou County and Ilan County are mostly alpine cabbage, which used to be supplied in summer when vegetables are scarce. However, Fu Lizhong says that because of climate warming, the number of planting periods of alpine cabbage has increased in recent years. In the past, there were only two stages, at most to three (note). But now some areas even grow to four.

Note: the planting and harvest time of the third stage of alpine cabbage is respectively: the first stage is planted from March to April and harvested from May to June, the first stage is followed by the second stage and the second stage is from July to August, and the second stage is followed by the third stage. The third phase is harvested from October to November.

The income of alpine cabbage is considerable, the times of conversion and planting in mountainous areas have increased, and Ilan has become the largest producing area.

The townships with the highest output of alpine cabbage are Datong Township in Ilan County and Renai Township in Nantou County. According to the statistics of the Council of Agriculture, there were 1223.65 hectares in Datong Township in Ilan County and 1173 hectares in Renai Township in Nantou County in 2019. Over the past ten years, the planting area of Ilan County has grown by nearly 200 hectares, and the annual output has nearly doubled.

The Datong Township Office in Yilan County said that because of the considerable income from cabbage, many farmers who used to grow watermelons, heading cabbages, and other short-term leafy vegetables have turned to cabbage, and now most farmers will grow to the third stage, and some farmers will even plant the fourth phase after the third harvest.

The production and Marketing Department of the Agricultural Department of Ilan County said that there is no nursery ground in Ilan, and most of the Korean vegetable seedlings come from the central and southern part of the country or are bred by farmers themselves, so farmers will be asked to reduce the quantity on their own, but there was no big production and marketing problem of cabbage in the county before.
