Porcine ileitis, also known as porcine proliferative enteritis, is caused by Lawsonia intracellularis, an acute and chronic disease with different symptoms. The harm to pig farm is serious, it is an invisible killer that affects the feed to meat ratio of pig farm, and its harm is low growth speed, low feed conversion rate and high death elimination rate.

Pathogenesis: proliferative ileitis is caused by Lawsonia intracellularis, which is most likely to grow in intestinal epithelial cells, causing inflammation and thickening of the mucosa of the small intestine and colon of pigs, resulting in intestinal villi unable to absorb nutrients and water from feed, causing diarrhea and overfeeding.

I. Clinical symptoms

1, acute type

It is characterized by sudden bloody watery diarrhea. When the course of disease is slightly longer, black cement-like loose feces are discharged, and sudden death can occur. Some pigs that died suddenly only had pale skin and normal feces. The incidence of severe cases is as high as 40%.

2. Chronic type

Performance for feed intake reduction, intermittent diarrhea, feces were pasty into water, some mixed with blood or intestinal mucosa fragments, undigested particles.

II. Anatomical symptoms

1) The pig ileum thickens and hardens, like a "rubber tube."

2) Ileal mucosa ulcer with cellulose-like substance

3) Coagulated or uncoagulated blood in intestinal cavity

4) Diarrhea of sick pigs, contaminated feces around the anus.

5) Cement-like loose stools containing a lot of undigested feed.

Third, why is it always repeated after medication

1. Keep proper temperature and humidity in the pens; proliferative ileitis occurs mostly in pig farms with large temperature difference, high humidity and poor sanitary conditions. It is recommended that pig farms prone to ileitis reduce the number of flushing pens to reduce humidity, strengthen heat preservation and regular disinfection of pighouses.

2, medication needs to reach the course of treatment for 14 days; intracellular Lawsonia mainly grows in the intestinal mucosa, medication for 7 days, then there is no way to kill pathogenic bacteria, so there will be repeated problems after stopping the drug. Continuous medication for 14 days can effectively kill pathogenic bacteria in intestinal mucosa and achieve the goal of complete cure.

3. Choose the correct drug treatment; the selection principle is tyavancin, tiamulin, tylosin.

IV. Summary analysis

1. Disinfection; before preparing to enter pigs, first empty all the pigs in the previous batch. After washing, soak the pig pen with caustic soda water and then clean it. The pig pen can be entered for more than 1 week.

2. Drug prevention: feed regularly added with 500g of tywanmycin +1000g/ton of doxycycline, not only can prevent and control ileitis, but also can prevent and control respiratory diseases and pig worm disease, streptococcosis, etc., for 10-15 days. Treatment of ileitis medication enough course of treatment, short time effect is not complete, easy to relapse twice. (Source: Headline Veterinarian Lao Xu)
