Hollyhocks need to remove some of the dead branches and cut off the withered parts and dead stems to leave the roots of the ground before winter. at this time, watering should be reduced or stopped to ensure the dryness of the soil. When the temperature drops too fast, the ground part of the root of hollyhock should be covered with straw and plastic film to keep warm.

Treatment methods of hollyhock before winter

1. Remove dead branches

It is normal that some branches of hollyhock will dry up or even wither before winter. Due to the low temperature, this phenomenon will gradually spread to the aboveground part of the whole plant, and the stem will wither and stiff, so it is not necessary to remain attached to the main root. At this time, it should be cut off from the part close to the root of the ground with scissors or knives.

2. Reduce watering

Hollyhocks will enter a semi-dormant state in winter, and water supply is no longer needed on the ground due to withering and removal, so the amount and frequency of watering should be reduced with the approach of winter, and too much water will cause silting or freezing. If it hurts the living roots, it is necessary to stop watering after entering winter and wait for the temperature to rise.

3. Wrap around the root

Generally speaking, hollyhocks do not need to be covered. The temperature of hollyhocks can survive between minus 5 degrees Celsius and minus 10 degrees Celsius, but when the temperature drops too much, in order to prevent hollyhocks from freezing to death due to low temperatures, straw is needed to cover the ground roots that remove dead stems and maintain the temperature of the roots. Using plastic film can have the same effect.
