Should the air root of Phalaenopsis be buried with soil?
Phalaenopsis blossoms very beautifully, and many potted friends plant it as a family pot for appreciation. But Phalaenopsis is a flowering plant with long air roots, and these air roots usually grow around the leaves.
As for whether the air roots of Phalaenopsis need to be buried with soil, first of all, we need to find out what effect these air roots have on Phalaenopsis. Facts have proved that the air root of Phalaenopsis can not only absorb nutrients and water in the air, but also carry out photosynthesis to form nutrients.
In other words, Phalaenopsis can not only get nutrients and water from the soil, but also need to be replenished from the air. When the air humidity is relatively high, the plant will grow air roots from around the leaves, so that some nutrients and water can be obtained from the air, making the plant grow more vigorously.
If we bury these long and thick air roots in the soil, not to mention whether it will grow or rot, it will at least affect its absorption of nutrients and water from the air. Therefore, the plant gets less nutrition from the air, which will inevitably affect the plant growth to a certain extent, so it is not necessary and suitable to bury these air roots.
And if the humidity in the basin is high, if these air roots are buried in the soil, it is often easy to cause air root rot, resulting in harmful bacteria in the basin, and then cause damage to the plants. Therefore, we usually let these air roots stay outside the soil but is more beneficial to the growth of the plant.
Of course, we can also bury some air roots in the soil, but the matrix we use should not be pure soil, but should be a mixed matrix made of water moss, bark, coconut shell and peat soil with strong permeability and water retention. In this way, it will not cause fatal damage to the air root. If it is buried with sticky soil, it will inevitably affect its breathing and suffocate it to death.
