Picking leaves is to remove the old leaves and overdense leaves in order to facilitate the ventilation and light inside the plant, promote the germination of new branches or control the vegetative growth of the plant, promote flower bud differentiation and flowering, and make the plant grow better. Proper removal of some leaves can also reduce water transpiration and make plants neat.

In general, evergreen flowers and trees, as well as all flowers and trees in the growing season, must remove some leaves to reduce water evaporation, which is conducive to survival. For some evergreen herbaceous flowers, such as Cymbidium, evergreen, bamboo, one-leaf orchid, calla lily, cyclamen and so on, the timely removal of some aging leaves can promote the germination of new buds. Acer frutescens, paulownia, etc., can remove old leaves between summer and autumn to promote the germination of new leaves. Many winter dormant flowers, such as leaf flowers, five-colored plum, etc., after entering the house in winter, all the leaves can be removed to promote their dormancy, which is conducive to the reproduction of leaves and flowers in the second year. When jasmine comes out of the room in spring, picking off the old leaves is conducive to more new branches, vigorous growth and many buds. But conifers are not suitable for picking leaves.
