November is the turn of autumn and winter, and the temperature in most parts of the country continues to drop. According to the cold resistance of different ornamental plant species, heat preservation and cold protection should be done to prevent garden potted flowers from causing unnecessary losses due to frost injury.

1. Watering

After entering November, the monthly average temperature in the south of Huaihe River is generally about 10 ℃, but because the air is relatively dry in autumn, for some hardy ornamental plants placed in the courtyard, attention should be paid to the combination of root watering and foliar spraying, but the basin soil should not be too wet to avoid rotting roots. For potted flowers whose bud is in the expansion stage, such as plum blossom, wax plum, camellia, tea plum, Belgian rhododendron, etc., more attention should be paid to spraying water on leaves and branches to create a more humid environment for the development and expansion of the bud. In the northern region, for potted flowers moved indoors or shed, especially foliage plants, it is appropriate to keep the potted soil moist and should not be watered too much.

two。 Fertilizer application

For potted camellia, tea plum, wax plum, plum blossom, Belgian rhododendron and so on, no matter placed in the open field in the south or in the greenhouse in the north, a small amount of low concentration of phosphorus and potassium fertilizer can be applied to facilitate the development and opening of plant buds. For Cymbidium, pineapple, chrysanthemum, cymbidium, cymbidium, cyclamen, primrose, Ruixiang, crab claw orchid and so on, as long as the greenhouse temperature is not lower than 15 ℃, we can continue to apply low concentration of phosphorus and potassium fertilizer to promote it to blossom well in winter and spring. For the vast majority of foliage plants placed in low-temperature greenhouses, all forms of topdressing should be stopped.

3. Pruning

As most potted foliage plants will be moved indoors in the middle of this month, the dead branches, disease and insect branches, thin branches, overgrown branches, cross branches and overlapping branches of potted ornamental plants should be cut off before moving indoors. For the plants modeled last autumn or this spring, in order to prevent the ligature from lashing the cortex for a long time, resulting in branch and leaf necrosis, it is advisable to remove the ligature first. If the desired modeling effect has not been achieved, the original binding position and angle can be changed and fixed again.

4. Guard against cold

It is not a big problem for the large bonsai that is more hardy in the courtyard to continue to be shelved in the courtyard for the winter, but for those small and medium-sized tree stump bonsai that can withstand low temperature, before the temperature drops to 0 ℃, they must be moved to the ground or moved into a simple greenhouse to keep the basin soil from freezing. For some ornamental plant species that cannot tolerate low temperature below 10 ℃, they should be moved into the greenhouse or indoor in time. For those ornamental plant species that are not resistant to frost and cold, it is necessary to timely and accurately understand the weather changes and move into the shed before the arrival of Frosts Descent.

5. Pest control

At the end of autumn and the beginning of winter, potted plants, especially those that have been infected with diseases and insect pests, should be comprehensively and carefully pruned, and the fallen leaves in the pot should be cleaned and concentrated before burning, which can reduce the degree of diseases and insect pests in the coming year. For the thick trunk, especially some dry, split and dry tree stump bonsai, stone-sulfur mixture should be smeared on the trunk or peeled part to prevent the trunk from moth or mildew.

The balcony suitable for balcony display although the sun is not very strong in November, due to the drop in temperature and dry air, only those potted flowers and trees that have been shelved on the balcony for a long time, have strong resistance and can withstand a certain degree of low temperature, can continue to be put on display on the balcony.

The main species are: black pine, brocade pine, five-needle pine, Platycladus orientalis, juniper, juniper, cypress, juniper, elm, sparrow, red nan, June snow, triangular maple, water bayberry, Luo Hansong, white wax, wax plum, melon seed yellow poplar, pomegranate, ginkgo, Tamarix, firethorn, four seasons cinnamon, etc., but we should pay attention to the pot soil can not freeze, otherwise it is very easy to cause the death of potted flowers or piles. For some foliage plant species that like cool environment and can tolerate cold slightly, they can still be placed on the inside of the balcony before the temperature drops to 5 ℃, such as palm bamboo, cycad, Canadian jujube, broad-leaved ten meritorious works, golden peach leaf coral, goose palm wood, one-leaf orchid, palm, sunflower, Ophiopogon japonicus, auspicious grass and so on.

The propagation of balcony flowers sows the seeds of cycad, bamboo and cypress, brown bamboo and pine, etc., washed and buried in a flowerpot filled with sandy soil. as long as the temperature is not lower than 0 ℃, it can be germinated and unearthed next spring. Can use a large flowerpot as a cutting container, containing sand loam or vermiculite as cutting substrate, for fully closed moisturizing cutting, can breed gardenia, goose palm wood, peach leaf coral, jasmine, pearl orchid, bergamot and other seedlings, as long as the temperature of the pot soil is not lower than 4 ℃ to 5 ℃, it can take root in the coming spring.
