I. in which direction is the tree ring denser?

Generally speaking, the tree rings are denser toward the shady side, that is, to the north. Because a ring is the growth of a tree in a year, and whether the tree grows vigorously or not depends on the light conditions. For big trees, the light conditions facing south are certainly better than those facing north, so the growth of trees facing south is stronger than that facing north, and the rings facing south are wider than those facing north.

What can annual rings tell us?

1. Look at the direction: the tree's rings are wide and narrow, and the rings are wide and sparse, indicating that the tree is growing well, facing the sun, that is, to the south. The narrow and dense side of the ring shows that the growth of the tree is poor, toward the shady side, that is, to the north.

2. Look at the age: a ring is the growth of a tree in a year. We can judge how many years the tree has lived by looking at the number of rings. However, if the temperature drops sharply in a certain year, and then the temperature rises again, there are likely to be two rings in that year.

3. Look at the climate: the rings of a big tree are wide and narrow. If a big tree has a lot of narrow rings, a very wide ring suddenly appears. It shows that at the beginning, the local environmental and climatic conditions are poor, the trees grow slowly, and then the climate is suitable, the trees grow rapidly, and a wide ring appears.
