In addition to mango, lotus fog and bamboo shoots, camellia is now the brightest cash crop for six turtles, and even represents the image at the entrance to the six turtles area. Xinfa Community is an immigrant community that has a lot to do with tea, including new immigrants from the famous tea villages of Nantou Lugu and Alishan in Chiayi. As a matter of fact, as early as 20 years ago, Liutortoise was a tea village that produced Jinxuan and oolong, which is famous for its milk flavor. There were 10 or 20 tea factories on the two-kilometer Xinfa Street, but after the August 8 storm, the desire to destroy the tea field was weak and silent for a long time.

After the typhoon in 2009, the six turtles area was in ruins, and Taiwan camellia was taken out from the ruins to revitalize the place. Does that sound familiar? Similar to the story of Hongyu black tea rising as a new force in Nantou after September 21. Hongyu not only saved Nantou's local tea industry, but also unexpectedly led to the prosperity of Taiwan's black tea.

The reason for the success of World War I is generally believed to be the excellent variety of Taiwan tea No. 18 (Hongyu). However, in fact, Hongyu was bred as early as 1951, and it was only after the earthquake in 1999 that it was used as a panacea to revitalize the place. Careful analysis of the reason for Hongyu's success is actually the cooperation of all parties in the industry, government and academic circles, including the results of the then township head's combination of local administrative resources, enterprise adoption, the government (tea reform) and scholars' assists. So, can Liuguishan tea also have such a big chance?

Liu Shifu and his father, teacher Ah Hua, have cooperated closely from tea making to marketing. The continuation of Taiwan's tea industry is mostly due to the lack of tutoring in wild camellia (photography / sappan wood). Tea farmers: "We are all independent and self-reliant."

"after the Morakot disaster, the first subsidy was used to purchase machines for making camellia." Lin Caie, who runs a camellia and coffee farm at Tengzhi No.2 Group, recalls. At present, there are about six large-scale tea factories on Xinfa Street, which are responsible for the production of tea, baking, packaging, and so on. Except for a small number of tea farmers who have tea gardens and can make tea themselves, there are about 30 tea growers who specialize in growing tea and selling tea.

During the first visit to Liugui Mountain Tea, I often heard tea farmers say that there was no management counseling here. Some people even think that Nantou fish pond tea should be responsible for the change. Break your fingers and calculate that there are five branches of the tea industry improvement farm in Taiwan from the south to the north (Yangmei General Field, Wenshan, Nantou Fish Pond, Taitung, and Frozen Top Workstation), while the six Turtles happen to be in one, which is a long way to go. It's a mountain away from Taitung, and it takes an hour or two to drive from Nantou. In the tutoring of the tea industry, I often hear tea farmers complain that "Ah!" We are all self-reliant! "

Is native camellia a project worth promoting in the end? At the beginning of last year, Li Yung-teh, chairman of the guest committee, went south to visit tea farmers in the hope of providing some assistance. The Kaohsiung Bureau of Agriculture also visited the six turtles local area many times and held meetings, saying that it was expected to promote Taiwan camellia with a budget of 45 million. But some people think that the money is poured in before the horse steps of the six tortoise mountain tea are squatted, but in fact, it is not a good thing! What is needed at this stage may not be funding, but direction.

Should it be cultivated on a large scale?

Xu Shengyi, who returned to his hometown two years ago, was the third generation of the Xinyuan Tea Factory. His father leased land in Baoshan and managed to grow and make tea on his own. The quality of the tea was good, but he took the route of low price. After returning to his hometown, Xu Shengyi did not focus on the production and sale of tea. what he wanted to do was to visit the producing areas of six-tier industries. Through a variety of tea-picking and tea-making experience itineraries, he took visitors to know the six turtle tea villages, and also developed all kinds of tea products, such as tea soap, tea biscuits, snacks and makeup remover oil.

Wen Zhongliang, executive director of the Meinong Rural Field Society, said that large-scale production is by no means the way out for six tortoise camellia, let alone follow the old road of single crop and large-scale cultivation. Camellia should be regarded as an important resource attraction for local creation.

The potential of Taiwan camellia should be studied scientifically and deeply.

The native camellia unearthed from the mountains belongs to tall trees, has the ability of natural cultivation in the wild, has deep roots and grabs soil, has a good effect on soil and water conservation, and is suitable for the growth environment of semi-shading. It is also very suitable for the "under-forest economy" policy that the government wants to promote.

Lin Wenzhi, an associate researcher at the six Turtle Research Center of the Forest Research Institute, said that in addition to setting up a camellia nursery, it has also set up seed gardens and ear gardens on the mountains to conduct long-term research and observation on camellia. In 2018, it participated in the "under-forest economy" program of the Forestry Bureau and Pingtung University of Science and Technology, cutting and planting camellia seedlings under abandoned Jinhuang mango trees. Cutting is a practice that does not disturb the mountain forest and can stabilize mass production, which is in line with the actual needs of the market. Taiwan camellia is very likely to be listed as one of the positive listed crops in the next wave of "under-forest economy."

The composition of Arbor Camellia is different from that of shrub tea. in addition to emphasizing the return to nature, the health part also emphasizes its rich ingredients, such as high catechins, low amino acids, pectin, trace elements, anthocyanins. But speaking of heaven and earth, we also need a scientific basis for support. "most people are promoting six tortoise mountain tea. if we only talk about organic and wild camellia, emphasizing that camellia does not use pesticides and fertilizers, it is a very precious kind of tea. This kind of strength is still not enough." Chu Wen-tong, a local elder, said earnestly and attentively, and reiterated more than once: "Taiwan camellia should be studied more deeply. For camellia, this is the way out!"

The rarity of native camellia attracts tea people to go up the mountain to find tea (photography / sappan wood) six tortoise tea has better antioxidant ability than ordinary green tea.

Zhou Fu-San, a specially appointed researcher at the six Turtle Research Center of the Forest Research Institute, has long taken Taiwan camellia as the research theme, and plans to set up sample areas in various native camellia discovery sites such as Mei Yuan Mountain in Nantou. In the past few years, he has devoted himself to collecting all kinds of tea cyanine samples. for chemical composition and antioxidant activity analysis, the results are very exciting.

In May last year, the six Turtle Research Center of the Forest Research Institute issued a press release that "six tortoise tea has better antioxidant capacity than ordinary green tea," confirming the health benefits of Taiwan camellia. Associate researcher Lin Wen-chih believes that the characteristics and taste of native camellia vary greatly, and it should be possible to study how to subdivide the strain into Taiwan Camellia No. 1, Taiwan Camellia No. 2, and Taiwan Camellia No. 3.

Master Luo Rongyu explained that the demand for moisture, fertilizer and shading of camellia is somewhat different from that of traditional oolong species (photography / sappan wood) individual camellia creates unique business opportunities.

Qiaomu tea is also known as Dashu tea. the most common Arbor tea that most people drink is Pu'er tea from Yunnan. In Taiwan, apart from Assam black tea, which has been dwarfed by tea trees, the so-called Dashu tea should belong to wild Taiwan native mountain tea.

When drinking six tortoise mountain tea for the first time, it was evaluated on the basis of taste, and from the point of view of the suitability of the tea, it felt that black tea should be the best choice. The pectin content of mountain tea is high, which is different from the general small leaf oolong tea. it is also a big test in tea-making technology. However, over the past few years, thanks to the hard work of the tea master and the exchange of experience from other places, Liuguishan tea is no longer Wu Xia Ameng in the past.

In the early days, the locals of six turtles only divided tea into green and red, but tea could be divided into six categories: "red, yellow, green, green, white and black." in recent years, white tea has also become a very popular option for six turtles. During a recent visit, I even found that the operators had used their brains to press camellia into tea cakes, followed the old tea route, and the waiting time mellowed. The more they put them, the more they preserved their value, and the better the taste.
