Chinese yam, also known as Huaishan, is a kind of root vegetable, but it also has certain medicinal value, so it is welcomed by many people. At present, the planting area of yam is still very large. When we plant yam, we should not only pay attention to its planting time, but also do a good job of management. So what exactly should be done? The following editor brings you the planting time and management of yam, let's have a look!

1. Planting time

The planting time of yam is very critical. Yam is usually planted around March every year. Under normal circumstances, it enters the flowering stage around July, the fruiting period is in September, and it can be harvested in October. When planting, it should be noted that the germination power of yam seeds is relatively weak, but the ability of asexual reproduction is strong, generally dominated by Reed head or bulblet reproduction. Chinese yam can be planted in the north and south of China, but because of different regions, the temperature and climate will be different, so the planting time is also different, so the planting time should be determined according to the actual situation.

2. Ploughing and weeding

If it is planted in the south, then after the emergence of yam seeds, it is generally in a high-temperature and rainy season. Therefore, the soil is prone to consolidation, especially when dryland is planted and there is no mulch. Whether it is raining or watering, the growth rate of weeds is very fast, so we should pay attention to do a good job in ploughing and weeding, usually about three times. The depth of mid-tillage should be changed from shallow to deep, and it should be properly loosened in the later stage of growth, so as to prevent root injury and affect the yield.

3. Set up a fight at the right time

Although Chinese yam is a root vegetable, its aboveground part has winding characteristics. Therefore, during the growing period of Chinese yam, we should pay attention to do a good job of scaffolding. It can not only improve the ventilation and light transmittance of the field, but also is very beneficial to the growth of rhizomes. And it can also avoid the clump of branches on the ground, resulting in disease harm. Usually when the yam plant grows to about 20cm height, it is necessary to insert a bamboo stick or branch next to it to allow the yam vine to climb. Ensure that the bracket is firm and its height is controlled around 20cm.

4. Water and fertilizer management

When planting Chinese yam, we should pay attention to watering, promote the growth and development of the root of Chinese yam, and improve the growth ability of the rhizome. If the water is insufficient, the yam is prone to malformed bifurcations and other adverse phenomena. When watering for the first time, you should pay attention to the amount of water, not too much, to avoid a thick neck. The demand of Chinese yam for fertilizer is also relatively large, we should not only apply sufficient base fertilizer. There are about three times of topdressing during its growing period, which are carried out in the seedlings 35-40 cm high, in July and in late August. The main method of topdressing was furrow application, and the amount of fertilizer application was adjusted according to soil fertility and fertilizer source.

The above is a brief introduction to the planting time and management of yam. That's all for today's introduction. This article is for reference only. I hope it can help you all.
