Do you know how many imported fruits you eat in a year? Taiwan spends more than NT $20 billion a year on imported fruits, but local fruits are actually nutritious, such as guava vitamin C or even 67 times that of apples! With the attack of pneumonia, the export of fruits is blocked, and local fruits are difficult. It is a good time to eat less imports and more local fruits!

"Taiwan is a land flowing with milk and honey!" Lee Moon-Sup, the owner of a well-known Lily Fruit Store in Tainan, knows the beauty of Taiwan's fruit best and has written about every kind of fruit. He says that if you want to be environmentally friendly, you have to eat on the ground. "eating fruits from Taiwan is the most environmentally friendly. You don't have to go through air and shipping, and imported fruits are picked before they are ripe, because they have to stay on the shelf for a long time, not the best nutrition."

Eat 300000 tons of imported fruit a year, half of which are apples

According to import data, from 1901 to 108, an average of about 300000 metric tons of fresh frozen fruit were imported each year, which is equivalent to the weight of water in 120 international standard swimming pools (about 2500 tons per swimming pool). If dehydrated dried fruit, frozen fruit, conditioned fruit, canned fruit, fruit juice and so on are added, it will exceed 400,000 metric tons.

Fruit imports account for about 10-15% of domestic production, spending more than NT $20 billion a year. How good would it be if we could keep some of this 20 billion in Taiwan?

If you take a closer look at the top eight items of import, the top one is apple, the second is kiwi fruit, and the third is grape, followed by oranges (mainly fragrant cheese), peaches (mainly peaches), pears, cherries and fresh durian.

Among them, Apple accounts for half of the total imports, importing 150000 8773 metric tons last year, which can fill 60 large swimming pools! In other words, each person ate 6.7 kilograms of apples last year, while we only ate 45.6 kilograms of rice in the whole year.

Why do Chinese people love apples so much? Lee Moon-Sup explained that the apple was a symbol of high class in the minds of people in the past, and it was only when they were sick that they could eat it. Until now, people are still used to sending apples when they go to see a doctor. In the past, many apples were reclaimed and planted in Lishan area, but later, imported apples opened up and almost all of them were beaten down, and domestic apples plummeted.

Apples are ruddy and pleasing, and they can be expensive or cheap. therefore, although the output of apples in Taiwan is very small, apples have become a common fruit in Taiwan. There is another advertisement for imported fruit, "an apple a day keeps the doctor away from me." Kiwi fruit advertisements are even more fierce, almost turning kiwi fruit into the king of nutrition. But is that really the case?
