Dahu Township in Miaoli County produces 80% of domestic strawberries every year, which is known as the "hometown of strawberries." The "Big-grained Strawberry Orchard", which is located in it, has been in operation for more than 20 years and was taken over by Yuan Shiqing four years ago. "the mother-in-law underwent surgery, and my husband was at work, so I came to pick it up!" Yuan Shih-ching, from Tainan, laughed cheerfully and could not see that she was a mother of two, and the eldest was even a freshman in high school.

Yuan Shiqing, who married to Miaoli 17 years ago, was a standard city lady before her marriage. Having no agricultural experience, she just began to go to the fields with her parents-in-law. "on the first day of marriage, when we went to the fields together and helped carry chicken manure and fertilize, I was so smelly that I fainted and was sent to the hospital. it was painful enough to move fertilizer for the next decade or so." Since then, she recalls, she has planted a seed to lose weight for the strawberry orchard.

During the more than ten years of helping, she also went to work, but after working, she felt that time was not free, and finally went back to farming in the field. "I think I am very suitable for farming, because when the work is arranged, I can have a lot of flexible time." Yuan Mengqing said confidently.

The key to growing strawberries: healthy seedlings and suitable growing environment

Because strawberries are delicate, they are often planted with heavy fat and heavy medicine in the past, so a large number of pesticide residues are often detected. In the past, my parents-in-law used to use a lot of chicken manure, pesticides, pesticides, and so on. "more than 100 packets of chicken manure were used at a time, each of which weighed 30 to 40 kilograms, and they were very tired every time." Yuan Zhi counted it in detail.

Before taking over, she often went to Miao to take classes and came into contact with concepts such as rational fertilization and IPM. "in fact, it is not difficult to grow strawberries well, that is, the seedlings should be healthy, and then create an environment suitable for growth." She said with a smile.

The first variety of healthy strawberry seedlings is selected. in the strawberry orchard with a size of 3 minutes, most of the varieties are perfume varieties, as well as the new variety Meggie and the traditional variety Fengxiang. "Perfume (strawberries) can resist powdery mildew!" Yuan Shiqing analyzed that in the past, large quantities of Fengxiang were planted and bred for more than 40 years, but they were no longer able to adapt to the current climate, so they chose perfumes with high disease resistance.

Another key to healthy strawberry seedlings is to raise seedlings. Last year, Yuan Mengqing worked with Zhong Xianzhe, an associate researcher on seedling transformation, and Zhang Zhiwei, a graduate student in plant medicine at ZTE University, to develop a two-stage propagation system to increase the yield of plants and seedlings by 25%.

In the past, the seedling raising method of strawberry farmers was as follows: after the walking stem was selected from the field in December, as the mother plant of the next season of strawberry, the stem was produced when the temperature increased, and then fixed to the small pot sub-plant, cultivated to August in May of the next year, and finally planted in the field. Yuan Mengqing believes that the maternal plants cultivated in the past are as old as 9 months and are more susceptible to disease.

The two-stage propagation system revised the previous seedling raising mode, changing the original daughter plant to the big basin as the second generation mother plant, and the second generation mother plant separated from July, and then entered the field as fruit-producing plant after three months of care. "after only three months from the vine to the soil, the strawberry seedlings are relatively young and healthy!" Yuan Mengqing said with a smile.

"I always remember the day when I smelled chicken droppings and fainted, so I never used it again after I took over!" She found that strawberry orchards due to years of excessive fertilization, resulting in fertilizer damage, strawberries can not absorb nutrients, resulting in plant weakness.

So she referred to the plant protection manual to approve friendly organic materials, chose organic fertilizer, and replaced it with a small number of meals instead of scaring the feet at one time. "my parents-in-law were very unforgiving at first, so how could they have enough nutrients?" Later, when they saw the results of the planting, their parents-in-law gradually let go.

Yuan Mengqing believes that the cost of money is similar before and after the change, because organic fertilizer is more expensive, but reduces a lot of labor time. "with 20 kilograms of organic fertilizer in a pack, you can maintain the same output with only 20 packs at a time." She added that organic fertilizer does not contain water like chicken manure, but is easy to sprinkle, which saves a lot of trouble.

Reduce medicine by 50%, pheromone, avoid crops, physical control, use medicine only as a last resort

As for the use of pesticides, Yuan Shiqing follows the IPM (Integrated Management of crop pests). "in order to take into account economic production, it is impossible not to use drugs, but medication is my last step." She stressed that even medication will confirm whether it is within a safe period of time, every half a month will do a quick screening test, announced to consumers.

Does such a transformation create pressure? Yuan Mengqing believes that when there is weather, he will worry about strawberries, but that's all. "unless the diseases and insect pests are really too serious, they will not be sprayed casually!" Compared with the past, the application of pesticide was reduced by more than half, and she mainly used pheromone, bogey crops and physical control in the field.
