The government has neglected the crisis of betel nut medicine for many years, which is not only harmful to ecology but also harmful to home health. at the end of September this year, people in Nantou could not bear the stench and poison of betel nut orchards near their homes. Immediately after spraying, the weeds under the betel nut trees were sampled and sent upstream and downstream for inspection. Results four kinds of insecticides were identified: highly toxic pesticides Jiabao Fu, butyl Jiabao Fu, Dimening and Baimening, all of which were all killer insecticides.

The Nantou resident said that every time the betel nut blossoms, the spray truck will come to the garden to spray medicine all over the trees with a high-pressure spray gun, and after spraying, there will be struggling and dead insects near the home, including bees bought to pollinate in the neighboring vegetable garden.

In this inspection report of weeds under betel nut trees, four insecticides were detected (upstream and downstream inspection reports)

When several widely effective insecticides were sprayed together, there was no difference in the death of insects.

Spraying bees at flowering stage has caused a collective sudden death of bees for three consecutive years, resulting in heavy losses by bee farmers, and a number of pesticide residues were detected in dead bees and pollen in honeycombs. However, the competent authorities have never thoroughly investigated which betel nut orchards caused the trouble. Who on earth is going to spray? What kind of pesticide is sprayed?

The upstream and downstream collected dead bees and pollen for testing in Puli, Nantou on August 14 this year. Each sample was found to be highly toxic to bees, and its aqueous suspension has been listed as a banned drug. In addition to fenpril, a variety of pesticides have been detected, showing the poison of pesticide cocktails in bees.

After this test, the weeds under the betel nut tree were more directly proved that the betel nut spray was mixed with multiple insecticides at the same time. The tested carbamates and butyl carbamates are highly toxic insecticides, neurotoxins of acetylcholinesterase inhibitors, contact and stomach toxicity to all insects, and highly toxic to bees. and systemic pesticides (which migrate in plants).

The other two insecticides, dimethalin and paracetamol, belong to synthetic pyrethrum, and both have wide-area insecticidal effect, so bees are naturally not immune. Moreover, the action mechanism of the two drugs is the same, and the simultaneous use is basically repeated use of the drug.

Provided by farmers

Poison Eagle Plus is banned, butyl Plus is still available, Metabolism is Placement.

The popular name of Jiabao Fu is "good year Winter". Because it is extremely toxic, farmers used to soak rice seeds with Jiabao Fu and then spread them in the fields to poison birds. as a result, many birds died, and even birds of prey that preyed on dead birds died.

As the voice of environmental protection and ecology is getting louder and louder, Jiabao Fu has been banned. The Council of Agriculture announced that the sale and use of 40.64% plus Baofu water suspension, 44% plus Baofu water suspension, and 37.5% plus Baofu water-soluble bagged wettable powder will be banned from 106 years. Only 3% of the low concentration granules are still in circulation.

So why do the test results still show this highly toxic pesticide? In addition to the possibility of using banned drugs, Zeng Teh-chi, an adjunct professor in the Department of Plant Diseases at Chung Hsing University, analyzes that there is a derivative product: butyl Jiabao, this pesticide is not banned, but after application, a chemical bond of its molecular structure is broken, that is, it is transferred to Jiaofu, so the test report may appear both at the same time.

Tseng Teh-chih said that these tested pesticides are quick-acting and widely effective old drugs, and their global market share has gradually declined. Because of their low prices, they have been widely used in Taiwan, making it difficult to achieve pesticide reduction.

Compared with other birds of prey that hunt live mice, black kites also pick up dead mice for food, so the Bird Ecology Research Office of Pingscience University also calls on farmers to pick up rat carcasses to avoid indirect poisoning caused by eating black kites. Frequent entry and exit of spray vehicles, damaged bee farmers: officials dare not control them.

Although the government announced that it would formulate recommended medicine and counseling for betel nuts, before that, it was illegal for betel nuts to be sprayed, but people in Nantou said that from time to time, spray cars could still be seen coming and going to and from the betel nut orchards, and even spraying medicine on the side of the road.

Many farmers have commissioned the management of the betel nut garden, and the spraying cars are all from other places, often in groups of two to three, with both native and foreign workers, usually masked. They will first mix pesticides near the betel nut garden where there is a source of water, and then spray them in the garden.

"We all feel that the authorities dare not control it at all!" The affected bee farmers in Nantou Puli also said that after the bee poisoning incident was seen in the media, the government also sent people to watch it, but betel nut spray trucks still went in and out of Puli every day, and there was no sign of any reduction, and the bees raised by bee farmers continued to die. some people have left 40 cases of more than 200 cases, resulting in heavy losses, and what is more sad is that there is no way to seek help at all.

Liang Qingkai, a bee farmer in Puli, said bluntly, "We are not asking betel nuts not to be sprayed. It doesn't matter if you want to spray. Let me know before spraying." But now betel nut spraying is illegal, and there is no contact between betel nut farmers and bee farmers.

Honeybees pollinate 1bat 3 crops around the world, which is critical to food security. The European Union uses laws to protect bees, such as Italy, with police to thoroughly investigate bee poisoning and death, and to strictly enforce the law against farmers who accidentally injure bees with drugs.

However, it can be said that there are few norms in Taiwan in this respect. it is inevitable that bees are injured by the routine spraying of vegetable and fruit growers, and bee farmers can barely put up with it. however, betel nuts, which are completely unregulated, even though the number of spraying is small, it can be seen that there is a great problem with the way of medication, and bee farmers lose all their money.

Prevention and Inspection Bureau: the specification for the use of betel nut is still under development, and highly toxic agents to bees will be excluded.

How are the regulations for the use of betel nut going? Feng Haidong, director of the Prevention and Inspection Bureau, said that at present, betel nut pests have been checked, and a list of commonly used drugs has also been collected, but in order to list the recommended drugs and methods of use, it is necessary to make an in-depth assessment: "in order to achieve the goal of environmental safety, we cannot agree to some modes of operation that are not friendly to the environment."

So will drugs that are harmful to bees be ruled out in the future? "if you can't use it, you don't have to, at least not when it's in bloom." Feng Haidong said that drugs that are highly toxic to bees will be eliminated first, but in fact, most pesticides are toxic to bees, so it is necessary to look for other ways of control, such as biological control methods such as pheromone induction.

Feng Haidong reiterated that as long as betel nut spraying is illegal, the police have been asked to cooperate with county and municipal officials to ban the pesticides detected in this Nantou sample. In the future, it is hoped that betel nut farmers will be induced to use chemicals that do less harm to the environment, and will cooperate with field collection yards and terminal spot checks to control betel nut drug use.

The incident of "sudden death of honeybees in Puli" will be updated at any time.
