Estrus Identification of Boer Goats
Boer goat is a kind of goat breed with large breeding area in China, and the economic value of Boer goat is relatively high. Now the market demand in our country is also relatively large, when raising Boer goats, we should strengthen management. Especially when Boer goats are in estrus, it is necessary to do a good job in estrus identification. So how to determine whether Boer goats are in estrus? The following editor will give you a brief introduction, let's have a look!
First, performance of estrus
Boer goats usually start their estrus around the age of 7 months. Estrus season is generally concentrated in the spring and autumn of each year, and less estrus in summer. The estrous cycle is generally about 20 days, and the duration can reach 1-2 days. About 35 hours after estrus, ovulation will occur. Ewes during lactation will be in estrus about a week after weaning. After estrus, ewes are mainly manifested in agitation, singing, excessive urination, loss of appetite and so on. If you look at the vulva, you will find that it is red, flabby and accompanied by mucus.
Second, estrus identification
1. External observation
External observation is the simplest and most direct way to determine whether Boer goats are in estrus. External observation is mainly through the observation of the external performance and vitality of ewes. As mentioned above, Boer goats show restlessness, loss of appetite and stop regurgitation after estrus. And will keep calling and shaking the tail. Observation of the vulva can find gradual congestion, swelling, but also the discharge of a small amount of mucus.
2. Check
The examination method is to examine the changes of mucous membrane, cervix and other parts of Boer goats to determine whether they are in estrus or not. First of all, fix the ewe and clean the vulva, then disinfect the opener and apply lubricant. Then slowly insert from the ewe's vaginal door, after insertion, open the front end of the opener to illuminate and check the internal situation. If the mucous membrane is congested, bright and moist, there is mucus and the cervical mouth is congested and open, then the high probability can be determined as estrus.
3. Emotional testing
In addition, we can also determine whether Boer goats are in estrus by means of estrus testing. Put the testing ram into the ewe flock every morning and evening, only once a day. The location of the trial should be kept flat, which can not only facilitate observation, but also pick out ewes in time. After putting the ewe into the flock, be careful not to shout loudly. You can drive the sheep away properly. If there is a phenomenon of sniffing ewes or teasing ewes or climbing over ewes, and the ewes do not move or take the initiative to approach the ram, then it can be determined that the ewe is in estrus, and at this time the ewes can be isolated and ready to breed. It should be noted that the trial time should be kept at about an hour.
The above is a brief introduction to the estrus identification of Boer goats. That's all for today's introduction. This article is for reference only. I hope it can help you all.
