As we all know, although succulent plants are more beautiful and lovely, and they are also more drought-tolerant and barren, their water tolerance is very poor. If there is water in the basin, it can easily lead to rotten roots and cause the plants to die. Therefore, in the process of maintenance and management, we should not only water scientifically, but also suggest to make a good filter layer or drainage layer at the bottom of the basin to avoid stagnant water in the basin caused by excessive watering.

However, there are many materials that can be used to build the filter layer at the bottom of the flowerpot, but the effects are different, some may be used for a long time, and some may be used for a short time. And from the perspective of economy, it is often different. However, the materials we use to make the filter layer are generally not obtained by way of purchase, but from nearby materials. So, can you put foam on the succulent bottom?

Foam is a very light and easy material, which has the characteristics of soft and brittle texture, strong air permeability and good water filtration effect. Therefore, using it as a filter material for basin floor has both advantages and disadvantages. The advantage lies in its strong air permeability and good filtration effect, which can play a good role in air permeability and drainage; the disadvantage is that its weight is light and soft and brittle, and if the basin soil is too heavy, it is easy to press it and reduce the permeability.

If planting succulent plants in pots, we also need to consider whether it is suitable to use foam to make filter layer at the bottom of the pot according to the size of the flowerpot and the amount of soil used and the texture of the substrate. If we plant small succulent plants in pots, we can generally use foam to build a filter layer. However, if we want to pot a certain number of succulent plants or larger plant type, because the pot is larger, the soil is more, and the quality of the matrix is larger, it is easier to press the foam, so it is not suitable to use foam to build the filter layer.

However, as a family potted plant, we usually choose succulent plants with smaller plant size or less quantity. Therefore, foam can usually be used to build a filter layer at the bottom of the basin. Although the basin soil we use to raise succulent plants is generally mixed with dense substrates such as coarse sand, vermiculite and perlite, the flowerpots are smaller and the pot soil is less used, so the foam is generally not compacted and hardened, at least in the short term.

However, if we want the filter layer of the basin floor to have a good filtration function for a long time, it is generally not recommended to use foam to build it. Usually we can use large particles of ceramsite or gravel, broken tiles and other materials that are hard and insoluble in water to build the filter layer, the effect is better. But at the same time, we also suggest turning the pot for the plant regularly to better promote the growth of the root system, so we can consider choosing a more suitable material to lower the original filter layer according to the damage of the filter layer.
