Last Updated: 2024/11/22, At that time, the Beginning of Winter, the end of the flowering period of Dahlia, there are more buds and robust shoots are available for cutting propagation. Winter cuttings bloom earlier than spring softwood cuttings, and 10-20 cuttings can be cut per plant, which can increase the number of materials by 3-4 times than that of root tuber. In the south of the Yangtze River, cuttings are cut before frost.

It was the beginning of winter, dahlia flowering end, there are more buds and strong shoots are available for cuttage propagation. Winter cuttings bloom earlier than spring softwood cuttings, and each plant can cut 10~20 cuttings, which can increase 3~4 times than root cuttings.

In Jiangnan area, cut cuttings before frost, 10~20cm in length (some slender internodes can also be used), and knock off flower buds. Leafless branches are also available. Some shoots have no nodes and can be cut from the trunk with a sharp knife. Cuttings can survive if one node is kept buried.

According to the requirements of nursery specifications, the row spacing is 3cm× 10cm, cutting in sunlight hotbed, depth is 10cm, pressing the root slightly with fingers, then watering thoroughly, setting up arch shed, covering white plastic film, ensuring that the minimum temperature is above 3℃, and pulling grass and watering at noon in the future when there is no wind and sunny day, but not too wet. According to experience, leafless cuttings are stronger than leafless cuttings, so old leaves and even branches wither without hindrance. Before and after awakening, sprout leaves from the root wrapping node, and then become new seedlings. Gradually uncovered exercise, clear after the formation of peanut size roots, out of the nursery planting survival rate can reach 100%.

Specific cutting process:

1. Land selection and preparation: select fields with deep tillage layer, loose and fertile land, flat terrain and good drainage. Before deep ploughing, apply 125 kg of calcium superphosphate per mu as base fertilizer, and add 0.5 kg of 50% agricultural land to disinfect the soil. The soil is deeply ploughed for about 15 cm. Then arrange and rake flat, make high or flat ridge width of 2 meters, ditch depth of 20 cm, and open internal and external "three ditches" to facilitate drainage.

2. Cutting method: From June to August, the lateral buds grow to 15 to 20 cm, and the lateral buds are cut and sown. 3 buds are needed for cutting, 2 buds are reserved on the upper part, the third bud is cut to the base of leaves, the leaves are removed, the second bud is inserted deeply into the soil, the water is poured thoroughly, and the stand is shaded by 50% shade net. Sunny day early, late watering once, continuous watering for half a month, soil moisture maintained at 90%, 3 weeks after rooting, survival rate is very high, the autumn can bloom.

3. Field management: after cuttage survival, compound fertilizer saturated leaching solution shall be applied once before and after intertillage weeding, and 400 ml mother liquor shall be added to each back-type sprayer (about 12.5 kg) for topdressing. Dahlia root should not be deep cultivation, so as not to damage the root tuber, and can prevent the occurrence of grass damage. Because the plant is juicy and soft, it must be erected to avoid stem and leaf breakage. When the floret variety seedlings are 15 cm high, the top will be hit to make the plant short and strong, and the flowers will be picked off in time to prolong the flowering period.

4. Disease prevention and insect control: Dahlia mainly has powdery mildew and brown spot disease, which harms the tender stems, flower stalks and flower buds of Dahlia leaves from June to October, affecting normal growth, and preventing and controlling them as soon as possible after discovery. 50% carbendazim 500 times solution or 50% manineb 800 times solution spray control, can effectively control the disease occurrence.

5. Harvest and storage: The second flowering period of Dahlia is from September to October. When the second flowering period is over, the plant stops growing, i.e., leaves 10 cm root neck before frost, cuts off branches and leaves, digs root tuber, dries for 1 to 2 days, and stores it in 3 to 5℃ cold room sand storage after the surface is dry. In the spring of the following year, it can sprout and blossom.
