Propagation technique of Michelia mollissima in pot
Michelia flowers, evergreen shrubs, native to southern China provinces, Guangdong Dinghu Mountain has wild. The bark is grayish brown, leaves leathery, flowering 3~5 months, fruit 7~8 months.
According to "Compendium of Materia Medica" and other medical records and scientific research, drinking herbal tea not only can make people happy, cheer up, but also has the magical effect of activating blood circulation, nourishing skin, nourishing health and prolonging life. Drink Michelia flower made of scented tea can remove blood stasis, new health, blood circulation pain, skin care beauty, with sedative effect.
Because of the smile flowers bloom and do not put, smile and do not speak this characteristic. Therefore, to a large extent, it represents the implied meaning and implication of the Chinese people. So, its flower language ~ reserved and reserved.
Spring, is indeed a fragrant season, smiling flowers everywhere filled with flowers. If you can't remember the flowers, you must smell them now. It has a unique aroma, not easy to forget after smelling, there is a faint banana dew aroma. Hakka people must know banana juice, which is a spice added when drinking fairy noodles. Other places called immortal recognition for cold noodles.
Michelia flowers can be propagated by sowing, grafting, cuttage and layering. Here are some examples of different breeding methods:
1. Sowing method
This method is suitable for mass reproduction, but the flowering period is late and the flowers are slightly smaller. Sowing can be carried out as soon as it is picked, or it can be stored in sand until late February to early March of the following year. Seedbed appropriate with good drainage sandy loam. Sow a small amount of seeds directly in flowerpots. After sowing, cover with charred soil, place in shade, after about 1 month time can emerge. After emergence, it can be managed according to general sowing seedlings. Transplant with soil in spring of next year.
2. Grafting method
Grafting propagation, often purple magnolia, magnolia for the rootstock for grafting, but also easy to survive. Grafting time, spring grafting should be in late March to early April before germination of Michelia. Autumn grafting should be done from late September to early October. Autumn grafting seedlings to strengthen tending, spring grafting management is easy, grafting survival rate generally up to 85%. Grafting generally adopts the method of cutting and grafting. The scion selects the healthy annual branches in the middle and upper parts of the mother tree, which are 1-2 nodes long and do not have leaves. The operation technology is conventional cutting and grafting. After cutting, in order to prevent moisture from entering the wound, it is necessary to cover the straw and expose the top tip. After about 25 days, the scion can heal and begin to sprout. At this time, the cover grass is removed and the bud on the rootstock is wiped off in time.
3. Cutting method
Under normal circumstances, in addition to winter cold and summer high temperature, the rest of the time can be cuttage.
More plants can be propagated in a short time by this method, but the growth is slower than that of grafted seedlings. Cutting time in spring and summer for the appropriate. Spring planting in late March, select 1-2 years old branches, 10-15 cm long, cut off the lower leaves, insert loess mixed with river sand (6:4) as the substrate of the seedbed, after planting, require shade (light transmittance of about 30%), often keep the bed wet, after rooting on the pot planting. Summer planting selection of semi-lignified branches of the year, about 8 cm long, the same method as spring planting.
It should be noted that the summer temperature is high, the air humidity is large, and there are conditions for the breeding of various diseases. Therefore, the cutting substrate must be disinfected. In addition, if the base of cuttings can be soaked in 200ppm of indole butyric acid for 15 minutes, then taken out and dried, the rooting can be accelerated and the survival rate can be improved.
4, layering method
Layering and cuttage are actually a principle, both using the ability of branches to grow adventitious roots. Cuttage is separated from the mother, although the propagation volume is large, but the reliability of survival is not as good as layering, and the family generally propagates 2-3 plants enough, so layering method is suitable for family propagation.
The layering can be carried out at any time during the growth period of Michelia. But April is suitable, select 2-year old branches with proper size, good development and abundant tissue, 15-20 cm long, make circular peeling with width of 0.5 -1 cm at the selected root position of soil wrapping, reach xylem deeply, and apply naphthylacetic acid with concentration of about 40ppm, then cover plastic bag with proper size at the ring peeling position, the lower end is solid, fill moss and culture soil or vermiculite with sufficient water absorption in the bag, and leave holes at the upper end for irrigation and ventilation.
During the maintenance period, pay attention to pouring some water into the bag frequently to ensure a certain humidity, and must not dry up (but not accumulated water or too wet). It takes about 2 months to root. After the new roots are fully developed, the young plants can be cut off from the mother plants and planted in pots. After putting on the pot, place it in the shade for 2 weeks, do not fertilize, and gradually increase the light afterwards. After that, water and fertilizer management was carried out gradually as the same as that of the mother plant.

Pruning method of Michelia bonsai
Michelia likes weak shade, not resistant to drying and exposure, like the soil layer of deep and fertile acid soil, cold-resistant, should be planted in the leeward. The fertilizer and water management of potted Michelia is similar to that of Lamei, except that it is shade-tolerant and requires higher air and soil moisture. Its flowers give off a stronger banana smell when the temperature is higher.
