Taiwan's Wendan output: the Agriculture and Food Administration predicts that this year's Wendan output will be reduced by 10%, which is still 6% higher than the usual annual output.
In the warm winter at the beginning of this year, many fruit trees did not blossom due to the influence of climate, and the yields of litchi and longan trees were reduced by 70%. Recently, some pomelo farmers found that the fruit production rate of Wendan was slightly affected. The Agriculture and Food Department announced on the 6th that the fruit production forecast for June. It is pointed out that Wendan's output may be nearly 10% lower than that of last year. However, the Tainan Agricultural improvement Farm says consumers need not be too nervous, because last year was the highest harvest in Tainan in a decade, and although it has dropped slightly this year, if the harvest period is not affected by natural disasters, domestic supply will be safe.
According to the Agricultural and Food Administration's 107 agricultural survey, the Wendan acreage in Taiwan ranks first in Tainan City with 1098.46 hectares, while the second largest producing area is in Hualien County, with about 1013 hectares. Taiwan's total output is 4209.5 hectares, with an output of about 70 9500 metric tons. However, because the number of flowers has decreased slightly this year and Rain Water affected the fruit during pollination, the Agriculture and Food Administration estimates that production will fall to 72,562 metric tons, equivalent to a 9 per cent reduction. However, compared with the annual output of 68,675 metric tons, it is an increase of 6%.
Chang Wen-Zhao, an associate researcher at the Tainan Agricultural improvement Farm, said that last year, the Tainan production area did not encounter natural disasters during the planting period and the harvest period was concentrated, resulting in a sharp increase in output and a serious impact on prices. Wendan is in the fruiting period this year, and it is not yet possible to determine the yield. in terms of the average fruit setting rate, although it is slightly lower than last year, it is still normal. Liu Qixiang, an assistant researcher at Hualien Agricultural improvement Farm in Hualien County, another major producing area in China, says that based on the average fruit setting rate, the yield may also be slightly lower than last year, but there are great differences in individual orchards this year. Some orchards are in normal or even good condition, so it is difficult to say that the decline in fruit setting rate in some orchards is affected by temperature.
The ripening period of Wendan pomelo is usually around the lunar calendar solar term "White Dew", and it takes one to two weeks to "say water" after harvest before it can taste good. But this year, White Dew's Mid-Autumn Festival is less than a week apart. In order to catch up with the Mid-Autumn Festival, which is the most popular, will it be harvested early and affect the taste of Wendan pomelo?
Zhang Wenzhao said that at the beginning of this year, some farmers had already made preparations in advance for the festival, advancing the pollination period of Wendan pomelo by a few weeks, so that the harvest time could be advanced in mid-late August, and certain quality could still be maintained and shipped before the Mid-Autumn Festival. In addition, in the Hualien producing area, where the harvest time is relatively late, Liu Qixiang said that it is now possible to improve the growth status of Wendan pomelo and flexibly adjust the harvest period through cultivation methods such as fertilizer and water management, so even if the solar terms are close to the Mid-Autumn Festival, which is more prosperous, it can still be adjusted to the right time for shipment.
The Mid-Autumn Festival is the peak price of Wendan pomelo in China, and sales decline as soon as the season passes. Yao Zhiwang, director of the South Division of the Agriculture and Food Administration, said that because Wendan pomelo is a fruit resistant to storage, in recent years, the Agriculture and Food Administration has also advised people not only to think of Wendan pomelo as gifts on the Mid-Autumn Festival, but also to enjoy the taste after the festival, hoping to increase people's willingness to buy. In addition, the Agriculture and Food Department is also actively guiding some orchards that are not suitable for growing Wendan pomelo to transform into other emerging oranges, appropriately reducing the planting area of Wendan pomelo and adjusting the yield.
