Grafting method of avocado
Avocado is not only nutritious, but also plays a prominent role in health care. More importantly, in addition to being planted on the ground, avocado can also be planted in pots. However, if you want avocado to blossom and bear fruit smoothly and improve the quality of the fruit, it is usually recommended that it be grafted to improve the variety. So, how are avocados grafted?
Many fruits can be propagated by using leftover seeds or kernels and then planted in pots. However, most varieties of fruit trees are not so easy to blossom and bear fruit when they grow up. Even if they can blossom and bear fruit, the yield and quality of the fruit are relatively low. The same is true of avocado, generally in the process of potted seedlings need to be grafted in time, so as to improve the yield and quality of the fruit. Today, the editor will share with you the grafting method of avocado.
First of all, we need to obtain potted seedlings of avocado, which can be bred by sowing seeds. The seedlings we obtained are mainly used to make rootstocks in the process of grafting, and the grafting methods can take bud grafting, cutting grafting, abdominal grafting, or even nuclear grafting.
In the process of grafting, the most commonly used method is bud grafting, which is not only suitable for avocado seedlings, but also for adult trees and big trees. And avocado grafting, as long as the temperature is suitable, not in the rainy season, generally can be carried out throughout the year. However, it is usually carried out in early spring and late autumn, and the effect is the best.
The editor takes the budding in autumn as an example to explain for you. If the autumn bud grafting is smooth, it can survive in the same year, and the germination and growth of the buds are better. However, when the temperature is too low in winter, measures to keep warm and prevent cold should be taken in time to avoid frostbite of young grafted seedlings. However, considering the temperature, budding is usually carried out in early spring in cold areas.
However, no matter when the budding is carried out, we need to ensure that the sap flows smoothly and the bark is easier to peel off, because in this case, the grafted seedlings are more likely to survive and grow better. When budding, the "T" shaped shield is mostly used, and the length of the cut shield bud is about 3 cm. As a rootstock, the branch thickness of the grafted avocado should be kept at about 1-1.5 cm, about 20 cm from the ground. After the buds are grafted, the grafted parts are wrapped and tied up with plastic film, and only the small buds are exposed.
After 2-3 weeks of grafting, if it goes well, the grafted seedlings basically survive. When the original binding is untied at this time, it can be found that the grafted seedlings have taken root and even sprouted. At this time, the excess part of the rootstock should be cut off in time, and after about 2-4 weeks, all the upper rootstocks should be cut off. At the same time, it is necessary to make the branches of the grafted seedlings as close to the rootstock as possible with the help of external force to determine the growth direction of the grafted seedlings.
When the grafted seedlings grow to a height of about 50-60 cm, we need to cut off the rootstock from about 1 cm above the grafted site in time. Pay attention to the operation to be careful to avoid accidental injury to the grafted seedlings, while the force should be uniform, to ensure that the short section remains smooth, which is more conducive to wound healing. If grafting is carried out by this method, the general survival rate can reach more than 50%.
Of course, in addition to bud grafting, for potted seedlings avocado, we can also take the way of cutting. However, the cutting method is generally used for tall tree species, but it is also suitable for young plants such as avocado, and the grafting process is often carried out in spring. However, the scion is required to be an annual branch with more than 2 buds, and if smooth, the survival rate can reach more than 80%. Compared with bud grafting, it has more advantages.
In addition, the grafting of avocado young trees can also take abdominal grafting and nuclear grafting two means, because their principles are similar, here the editor will not continue to elaborate for you. However, no matter which way is adopted for grafting, we should follow the scientific and standardized process. Moreover, we also need to pay attention to the maintenance and management work in the later stage, so that it can finally blossom and bear fruit.
