Last Updated: 2024/11/08, Penholder trees, listed as "second-class rare and endangered plants" by the Washington Convention, have suffered from wilt in Taiwan in recent years, resulting in a decline in the number of ethnic groups. Xie Qingxiang, a professor in the Department of Agricultural Garden production at Pingtung University of Science and Technology, led graduate student Zhou Yuru to "the aseptic production system of sporophyte in penholder tree."

The tree, listed as a Class II Rare and Endangered Plant by the Washington Convention, has suffered from wilt in Taiwan in recent years, and its population has declined. Professor Hsieh Ching-hsiang of the Department of Agricultural Production at Pingtung University of Science and Technology led graduate student Chou Yu-ju to establish an aseptic production system for the sporophyte of the tree. He successfully artificially propagated seedlings of the tree from green spheres, allowing the tree to regenerate and revive.

The green ball of the tree is multiplied twice as fast as the traditional spore reproduction, and the reproduction quantity is 10 to 20 times more than the traditional spore reproduction. At present, many seedlings of the tree can be cultivated.

However, Xie Qingxiang also mentioned that although a large number of seedlings of penholder trees can be cultivated at this stage, but because of the high environmental requirements of penholder trees, such as humidity to be in a very high environment, it is still not optimistic to restore penholder trees in the wild.

In addition, Zhang Yuwei, a student in the Department of Agricultural Sciences of Pingtung University, also studied the theme of "Sporophyte Induction and Establishment of Green Sphere Regeneration System of Staghorn Fern". Using green spheres to cultivate Staghorn Fern, through creative methods, he produced "bottle planting" and "plant bottle landscaping", which became popular healing products. Hsieh Ch 'ing-hsiang says that green sphere technology can not only reproduce rare fern seedlings, but also combine cultural innovation to cultivate ornamental ferns, and can also rapidly reproduce medicinal ferns such as drynaria in large quantities. R & D and business opportunities are limitless.

Taitung District Improvement Field also developed green sphere fern reproduction technology in 2017. Zhou Yuru said that although they are all green spheres, there are different formulas and technologies to stimulate various ferns to produce green spheres. Currently, Chow Yuk Yu and Cheung Yuk Wai have also set up Fernyi Horticulture Enterprise Limited, which is one of 72 teams selected for the first phase of U-start Innovation and Entrepreneurship Project through the guidance of Pingtung University Innovation Incubation Center. Zhou Yuru said that he not only hopes to restore the tree in Taiwan, but also hopes to export the seedlings of the tree to other countries to help restore the tree everywhere.
