Miaoli County's Shihu Conservation Autonomy Ordinance is blocked, but don't give up, because there are still many people who care about Shihu! The residents of Fengshu Lane in Tunghsiao Township, Miaoli County, voluntarily took practical action to protect stone tigers. Li Lung-hua, former director of the Maple Community, began planting non-toxic rice in his rice paddies five years ago, mainly to eat it himself, and then sell the leftovers. The Forestry Bureau came to set up cameras here, and only then did it discover that Li Lung-hua's field really had stone tigers, civet cats, crab mongoose and other protected wild animals. With a view to creating a friendly habitat for wild animals such as Shihu as a starting point, rice, which is common in Miaoli, was selected as the target for the development of friendly farming, and "Shihu Rice" was created.

Nature's eggs under the friendly re-cultivation of abandoned fields

Li Longhua's field goes up along the hillside. The planting area is about 8 minutes, and it is also 2 harvests a year. The friendly farming mode is adopted to plant rice. Artificial weeding is not applied. Organic fertilizer is used for fertilizer. Pesticide money is saved, but more is spent on the cost of artificial weeding and organic fertilization. It takes about 2 to 3 times to plant weeds in the first phase of rice. If they are not removed by themselves, they are asked to help weed. The salary per day is 1500 yuan and meals are added. Organic fertilizer is also much more expensive than chemical fertilizer, which prevents him from fully profiting from the rice field. He said,"If you want to haggle, you can't do it." My wife is right. I'm not working now. Anyway, I'm just walking around in the fields. If there's grass, pluck it. That's good."

Before planting rice, this land was allowed to grow grass, that is, the land had not been cultivated for a long time, naturally pesticides and chemical fertilizers had not been used for a long time, but his partners felt that it was a pity to let the rice fields lie idle, and encouraged Li Longhua to plant some non-toxic rice. At that time, he only thought of planting non-toxic rice and eating it himself, but also did not think of protecting wild animals. Later, the Forestry Bureau set up surveillance cameras, only to discover that stone tigers, civet cats and crab mongoose would appear in this field. The non-toxic rice planted by Li Longhua was sold under the name Shihu Rice.

From 5 to 2.3 hectares of land white-bellied rail and stone tiger repay kindness

The Shihu rice field started with only 5 hectares. In March 103, the first rice transplanting was carried out in the field. Four Mesozoic farmers in Fengshu Li planted rice in a friendly way. After 5 years of hard work, the area cultivated by Shihu rice field has now reached 2.3 hectares. Shihu and his friends in Lishan can feed in this area without worrying about eating herbicides and other pesticides or eating rats that have eaten poisonous bait.

The owner of the farmland gave Shi Hu space to survive, and Shi Hu also had warm feedback. From the second phase of 103, the Forestry Bureau set up infrared automatic cameras around Shi Hu's rice fields, successively photographed wild animals and recorded what good they did in the fields! The Forestry Bureau said that through monitoring, it has been found that the rice fields cultivated by the stone tiger are very popular with the birds of the family Crake, because there are golden apple snails in the fields, and white-bellied crakes often come to eat golden apple snails in the fields, greatly reducing the chance of seedlings being destroyed. When the rice grows, the full grain will attract rats to eat, and the stone tiger will appear next. It will come to the field to hunt rats and protect the farmers 'harvest.

Miao 29 Township Road Wildlife Underground Road is very lively

For many years, stone tigers have been on the roadkill list, making people reluctant to give up. Wildlife living in shallow mountain areas are at high risk because of their proximity to human habitation. At present, Miaoli is the most stable habitat for stone tiger populations in Taiwan. Miao 29 Township Road is a road constructed by river banks, adjacent to Houlong River on the left and Miaoli City on the right. After investigation, it was found that this road is the key position of the shallow mountain corridor leading to Houlong Town, Zaoqiao Township and Xihu Township by Shihu population in Miaoli City. The Forestry Bureau established the "Miao 29 Township Road Friendly Environment Animal Passage Project" here.

The animals were indeed smart. The stone tigers, who could only stand in front of the protective net and watch the cars coming and going, found the wildlife lane that humans had built for them, allowing them to safely cross the road. The underground facilities under the road were modified water gates, equipped with animal reflectors, wooden ladders, and concrete box culverts. The cut habitats were connected again. Not only did the stone tigers know the way, but other small carnivores also knew that they had to cross the road by underground.

There are many kinds of wild animals in Shihu rice field area. The world under the lens is wonderful! (Top left: white-bellied rail, white-nosed heart, crab-eating mongoose, civet)

Li Longhua, who originally only wanted to grow non-toxic rice for himself, inadvertently became a Shihu rice field area.
