Lingnan School Bonsai Making Technique
The creation of Lingnan bonsai is mostly based on local materials, selecting subtropical and tropical evergreen fine-leaf tree species, generally based on the stump that Guangzhou people call "Shu Tsai Tou", with dozens of varieties. Lingnan bonsai is one of the excellent traditional arts of the Han nationality and a treasure of garden art.
People in Lingnan, especially in Guangzhou, love bonsai, and planting bonsai has become a part of people's life. Bonsai is planted and arranged in many families' rooftops, balconies, living rooms and study rooms, so as to beautify the environment and adjust life. Lingnan bonsai is often used in Shiwan colored pottery pots, such as disc, square basin, polygonal basin, oval basin, long enterprise, tall body basin and so on. Pay attention to water absorption and ventilation, color harmony, moderate size, simple and elegant. There are several landing type and shelf type, more use of mahogany and other more valuable wood production, so that it is coordinated and harmonious, set off each other.
Lingnan bonsai has three characteristics that are different from other schools:
First, unique creative techniques, learning from nature, highlighting branch skills, shaping or composition layout comes from nature and higher than nature, and strives for the organic combination of natural beauty and artificial beauty, so Lingnan bonsai is known as "living Chinese painting".
Second, focus on the shape and choice of the scene and the basin, and strive for the harmony and coordination between the basin and the basin.
Third, make good use of pruning without revealing knife scissors. This technique is the most important feature of Lingnan bonsai, so it is generally believed that Lingnan bonsai is purely cut with knives. Through pruning and cutting leaves to allow plants to grow and develop according to human will, with the passage of time, artificial cutting marks gradually disappear, various shapes like Tiancheng, miraculous craftsmanship.
According to the tree species adopted by Lingnan bonsai according to its natural advantages, we can use artificial technology to fill the defects of the tree stump, make the works perfect, and better highlight the tree species style and reflect the intention and character of the creator. The specific decoration techniques are: carving and chiseling method, picking skin method, peeling method, wood anvil method, with branch method, T-branch grafting method, direct grafting method, head root air root grafting method and so on.
1. Carving and chiseling method
It is to drive away the redundant parts of the stump that do not meet the creative requirements or the horizontal branches that affect the creative conception and shape of the work to be cut off in time when changing the blank, so that the aesthetic coordination of the whole work will not be affected. When using the cut-off method to trim the tree billet, chisel the wound into a slightly arched shape after sawing off, keep it smooth and clean, then apply wound healing liquid, cover the surface with plastic film and tie it with rope.
2. Skin picking method
If there is a slight depression in the trunk, which affects the integrity of the tree or feels that some part of the trunk epidermis is too smooth and not rugged enough, the method of picking skin is used to reshape it. In the need for plastic surgery, along the tree grain, cut the cortex with a sharp knife, gently pick the cortex away from the wood, so that the plastic part of the cortex and wood slightly separated, and so on to grow to a certain time, the selected wound will gradually heal, there will be a bulge phenomenon, or due to the uplift, resulting in the height of the epidermis, making the trunk abrupt and rugged.
3. Peeling method
The principle and effect of skin peeling is similar to that of mischief. The peeling method is suitable for beating with wooden hammers made of harder wood.
4. The method of chopping wood
In the creation of a certain part of the stump is too deep, affecting the aesthetic coordination of the whole work, it is necessary to use the wood chopping method, first use a straight sharp knife in the sunken part that needs to be processed, chisel a crack deep into the xylem in the direction of the cortex, and then use harder wood to make an anvil as wide as the crack, and the thickness depends on the requirements that the sunken part of the trunk needs to rise, and hit it lightly along the crack of the chisel to make the surface cortex rise. But the cortex must not be broken.
5. Other common grafting methods
There are some methods, such as branch method, T-branch grafting method, direct grafting method, head root air root grafting method and so on.
