Sparrow plum vine, also known as sparrow plum and pair of thorns. It is a trailing shrub of the genus Rhamnaceae. The bark is grayish brown, the branches are thin and long, and the leaves are small, leathery. Florescence September-October, spike panicle, green-white. From April to May in the second year, the fruit is purple-black when it is ripe, and the ornamental value is higher. Sparrow plum vine like light, slightly resistant to shade; like humid climate, cold tolerance is not strong; strong sprouting, resistant to pruning; lax soil requirements, can grow on neutral, acidic and alkaline soil.

Sparrow plum vine has strong adaptability, strong growth, developed root system, strong sprouting ability and resistance to shaping and pruning. Like warm and humid climate, anti-hemorrhoids thin, anti-dry. Growing in the semi-shade is especially popular. Vines rock climbing around stone, strong wall attachment, branches and leaves oblique, dense, elegant and unrestrained, vines ancient and strange, for excellent climbing plants. Hedges are often used in gardens or potted plants. Potted plants should be trimmed regularly and can be tied into various shapes. In addition, the fruit of sparrow plum rattan is sweet and edible, the tender leaves are used instead of tea, and the roots are used for medicinal purposes. So, how to breed and cultivate sparrow plum vine bonsai?

1. Seedling source selection

1) Propagation: when the seeds of Finch plum are fully mature, they are collected and sown in loose, fertile, well-drained sandy soil (tidal sand) or rotten leaf soil. After emergence, it began to take soil and transplant in the nursery in October of the third year, and it could not be cultivated in the pot until 6 years after sowing. If you sow and breed, it will take at least 10 years to cultivate the elegant sparrow plum stump bonsai.

2) Finch plums are usually cultivated in pots with seedlings of more than 3 years, and some bonsai have been cultivated for more than several decades, and the old piles newly excavated in the mountains are even older. To make small or miniature bonsai, often sowing or cutting seedlings born in 2023. While making large and medium-sized bonsai, take out more wild tree stumps, find the old natural stumps that are old, crooked and peculiar in shape, dig them back, pay attention to protect the roots, remove useless branches, and plant them on the garden to raise blanks and pot them after 2012.

2. Stump treatment

Before planting, properly soak the stump in water, soaking time should not be too long, otherwise there will be dehydration. The wound at the end of the stump needs to be sealed with latex to reduce evaporation of water or spread of dead branches from the wound. After initial treatment and cutting, the stump should not be planted or placed in a high place. High in the strong light, dry wind blowing, the stump itself insufficient water supply, water volatilization, it is easy to die, sparrow plum should be planted in the sun and wind shelter.

The best planting season for the newly excavated pile head is between December of each year and March of the next year. If the bud branch is 10cm long and 20cm long, it can erase the bud that does not need to be left, and the branches that are too long should also be properly cut short, so as to reduce the consumption of water and concentrate the nutrients of the tree to the wounds of the stump and branch.

3. Cultivation methods

The main results are as follows: 1) soil selection: Finch tree has strong adaptability to soil, but its requirements for soil are not very strict, and it can grow in slightly acidic, neutral and slightly alkaline soil. General planting can choose fat and loose sandy soil, such as non-sandy soil, you can join some family-burned dregs.

2) put on the basin: in spring, before the sparrow plum vine sprouts, it will be put into the pot from February to March. The basin soil is better with loose and fertile slightly acidic soil, which can be made of rotten leaf soil, garden soil and pond mud mixed with sand. Match basin often use light-colored glazed pottery basin or purple sand basin, basin shape to rectangular or oval is appropriate.

3) modelling: the old pile shape of sparrow plum vine should be modeled according to its own characteristics and be guided according to the situation. The method of coarse binding and fine cutting is often used. The common forms are inclined dry type, horizontal dry type, curved dry type and cliff type and so on. Twigs are often trimmed into flakes or steamed buns.

2) moisturizing: the sparrow plum vine bonsai planted at a high place or placed on the balcony should keep the basin soil moist, especially summer plum or autumn plum, against the wind, most of the basin soil can be covered with thin film to reduce the evaporation of moisture, but it is necessary to prevent stagnant water and airtight phenomenon in the basin.

4. Maintenance and management

1) site: sparrow rattan bonsai should be placed in a sunny, ventilated, warm and humid environment, shaded in summer and maintained in winter.

2) watering: Finch plum vine likes the humid environment, the growing season should keep the basin soil moist, but the water should not be too wet. Spray water on the ground and leaves in summer to lower the temperature and prevent dryness.

3) fertilization: in the growing season, watering thin fertilizer every 20 days or so, do not apply fertilizer during the dormant period.

4) plastic surgery: the sprouting power of sparrow plum vine is very strong, and it is pruned once a year after autumn to remove the beautiful branches such as dense branches, overgrown branches and branches of diseases and insect pests. At the same time, heart-picking and leaf-picking should be carried out. The best viewing period for Finch rattan is when the new leaves begin to bloom in spring. If you can pick the old leaves several times and apply some nitrogen fertilizer before entering autumn, it can promote the germination of new leaves. After 20 days, we can enter another viewing period.

5) turn the basin: usually turn the basin once every 2-3 years, and the time should be in early spring from February to March. While changing the basin, pay attention to pruning the root system and applying sufficient base fertilizer.

6) Prevention and control of diseases and insect pests: there are many kinds of diseases and insect pests in Finch plum trees, including longicorn beetles, shell insects, thorns, red spiders, stem borer and so on. Therefore, we should always pay attention to inspection and spray trees with insecticides once diseases and insect pests are found.

The sparrow plum tree is sunny, heat-resistant, cold-resistant and shade-resistant, so it does not need to be moved into the indoor for maintenance in the south. However, at the end of autumn in the north, people should be moved to indoor care, often move out of the outdoor recuperation during the day, move indoors at night, and minimize moving outdoors in winter.
