[initiative] 2019 Japan-South Korea Joint statement on Anti-GM Potato
Joint statement on sharing 2019 anti-GM potatoes from Japan and South Korea
The government forbids enterprises not to sell and people not to eat.
Taiwan, Japan and South Korea in East Asia are all under pressure from multinational companies to strongly dump GM food raw materials. In recent years, Sinoprau has introduced E12 genetically modified potatoes that use RNA interference (RNAi) technology, have low acrylamide and reduce dark spots, and have passed the safety reviews of Japan and South Korea. In Taiwan, E12 genetically modified potatoes applied for import in 2017 and are still under review.
More and more academic studies have pointed out that eating GM foods may have negative effects on human health. Even, in his book Pandora's potatoes: the worst GM crops, Dr. Caius Rommens, the developer of GM potatoes, revealed that E12 GM potatoes did not properly conduct risk assessment tests and that the unknown health risks were higher than those of other GM crops.
Civil society groups that focus on local agriculture and consumer rights around the world say that there are already non-GM potato varieties with low acrylamide characteristics in nature, and the claimed characteristics of GM potatoes are just commercial gimmicks that not only waste a lot of money and manpower in vain, but also put people's health and environmental ecology at unforeseen risks.
In view of the misgivings about the harm of GM potatoes, the anti-GM movement of Taiwan, Japan and South Korea, which was established in May 2018, jointly launched the "Anti-GM Potato" initiative in May this year, proposing the "three noes" action of "the government forbidding", "enterprises not selling" and "people not buying". Ask the government to adopt a stricter censorship mechanism, call on enterprises to uphold their conscience and social responsibility to refuse to sell, at the same time gather the strength of consumers to refuse to buy and eat, and work together to prevent the invasion of fundamental reforms into our lives.
