Why can a plain, earthy baked sweet potato occupy the most conspicuous place in a convenience store? In recent years, there has been a frequent imbalance in the production and marketing of various kinds of crops in China. Our local symbol: sweet potato, however, is making steady progress and increasing output. What is amazing is that prices have also risen at the same time, with an annual output value of more than 4 billion, and a large-scale attack on the international market!
In the end, how did the sweet potato turn over? The national sweet potato industry has such an eye-catching performance today, thanks to the cooperation between Guayuan and the family convenience store eight years ago. What is the internal skill and mental method behind creating this wave of golden business opportunities? It is worth learning from other agricultural products.
Look at the sky to eat, the quality, output is unstable, almost all agricultural products are hard injury, sweet potato is no exception. However, 24 hours a day, all the year round, this "whole family tamped sweet potato" can be supplied all the time, selling 23 million pieces a year. What is more rare is that the taste of each sweet potato is consistent, which is a miracle for an agricultural product without any additives.
Behind this sweet potato is a thousand hectares of land and more than 600 farmers, who have coalesced more than 20 years of obsession with Excelsior, putting consumer demand first. Year-round supply, behind a promise is the challenge of the farm
When a whole case of raw sweet potatoes with dirt goes into the convenience store, the clerk must wash and roast sweet potatoes, bake them just right, and taste the same throughout the year. The most difficult thing is that there are more than 2,000 superbusinesses in Taiwan 24 hours a day all year round, and they all have to be in good supply.
"this is the biggest challenge for agricultural products, not only quantity, but also stability. We have to think of a hundred ways to stabilize it," says Chiu Yu-hsiang, pushing back from the consumer end to the production end. "if there is a stable supply throughout the year, there are a lot of things to do when we get back to the farm."
For example, if you need 300 hectares of sweet potato every month in the future, you will have to find 300 hectares of seedlings for farmers to plant six months ago. "if you want to plant ten plants a day, that's 400000 plants. Every day!" Is the seedling enough? Is there enough manpower? Everything has to be carefully planned. Qiu Yu-hsiang said frankly that at the very beginning, he lost a lot of money because of the problem of seedlings. He called too many seedlings and could not plant them immediately, so the seedlings withered and had to be discarded and had to buy new ones. Therefore, the consumption can be reduced by redistributing the cultivation, contract, collection and transportation of seedlings.
The cruel reality of watching heaven to eat is bound to be encountered. When sweet potatoes are planted, it is the typhoon season. "I am most afraid that the whole field will be flooded!" Huang Hsin-feng recalls that in two years, typhoon floods inundated hundreds of hectares of fields, and the yield of the sweet potatoes that grew later was so poor that the whole field was even scrapped, so they had to chase seeds constantly and try their best to replenish the yield.
