Michelia mandshurica is native to the provinces and regions of southern China. It is wild in Dinghushan, Guangdong, and is born in the forest of mixed trees on the shady slope. Fragrant flowers and trees, bracts as moist as jade, fragrant if orchid. So when do Michelia flowers usually bloom? How many times a year do you bloom? When is the best month to plant? The details are as follows:

When will the Michelia flowers blossom

Michelia flower petals are light yellow, with purple halo on the edge, the flower diameter is 2 to 3 centimeters, has a strong banana flavor, the natural flowering period is from March to May. Michelia mollissima also belongs to the same species, purple flowers, purple flowers; deep mountain Michelia, flowers as white as jade, as big as lotus, Ye Tonglan.

Michelia flowers last until April to May, but if the branches are pruned frequently, they can blossom in three seasons a year. Although it does not bloom as much as in spring, the fragrance of the flowers is still very strong. It only happens once a year.

Michelia mollissima can be propagated by cutting, ring wood propagation and grafting.

The cutting method is suitable from late July to early September. Lignified shoots or terminal buds with 3-8 leaves can be taken from late July to early September, and then planted on sandy soil with hairy root element at the base of cuttings, and properly shaded and kept moist. Rooting can take place in about 2-3 months, and then transplanted in the next spring.

The 2-year-old branches with good development and strong tissue were selected for circle branch propagation in April. The girdling of wide 0.5cm was carried out in the appropriate part of the branch, reaching as deep as xylem, applied with moist bryophytes on the girdling site, wrapped in plastic film, and rooting in about 2 months. After the new root is fully developed, it is cut and cultivated in the pot. after cultivation, it should be watered thoroughly, and then watered once a day or not. Fertilization began when the new shoots grew around 7cm.

The grafting method, which is less commonly used in the industry, should be implemented between May and June, and Magnolia is often used as the rootstock, which can grow rapidly after survival. The smiling flowers with thick and succulent roots are not resistant to transplantation. if it is really necessary to carry out transplantation, it is appropriate to bring more soil balls, while the pruning and shaping of plants is appropriate before overwintering.

Cultivation techniques

Management and maintenance

Watering

Keep the basin soil wet at ordinary times, but never get too wet. Because many of its roots are fleshy, such as too much watering or basin waterlogging after rain, it will turn into rotten roots, so we should pay attention to controlling humidity in rainy season. Need more water during the growing period and before flowering, watering once a day, high temperature in summer should be watered to the leaf surface to maintain a certain air humidity. It can be watered once or twice a week in autumn and winter due to short sunshine.

Fertilizer application

Michelia flowers like fertilizer, mostly use rotten cake fertilizer, bone meal, chicken and duck manure and fish belly intestines and other retting fertilizer mixed with water, apply fertilizer every 15 days in the growing season (April-September), and stop fertilization after flowering and October. If you find that the leaf color is not bright and thick green, you can apply fertilizer and water for once.

Pruning

Michelia flowers should not be over-pruned, usually after flowering, the overgrown branches, diseased weak branches and overdense overlapping branches can be pruned, and the post-anthesis fruit can be subtracted to reduce nutrient consumption. Before sprouting in spring, remove some old leaves properly to trigger new branches and leaves.

Turn the basin

Turning the pot every 1-2 years should be done before the new leaves are released in spring, or after flowering, or in autumn. Combined with changing the basin to remove some of the old soil, replace it with fertile and loose soil, subtract withered branches and overgrown roots, and place sufficient base fertilizer in the basin.
