Stinky durian is a typical representative of jungle durian. The impressive red interior is so shockingly bright that many people question the use of food coloring. It is also one of the most popular varieties of durian and is widely sold in markets across Borneo. Many people actually prefer ordinary durian, and for good reason.

Despite its fame (or perhaps because of it), the stinky durian is the most puzzling of all durian species we have found.

Lipstick red durian meat is the image of most people associated with stinky durian. It is small, bright yellow in appearance, and sometimes brown. It has a mild smell, thick cheese meat, almost no taste. Many people compare it to eating avocados.

But there is another side to stinky durian. Addictively smooth, nutty, tacky side, it's thick and hard to swallow. So delicious, sweet and greasy that Rob and I debated whether it could be compared to bell pepper cheese (vegetarians and our memories). This version of Durio graveolens is neon orange or bright yellow, wrapped in a sharp green or yellow appearance. It can be as big as a small Durio zibethinus.

Durian may actually be two species mixed with the same name. Given the different ways in which the two fruits are ripened, it seems more likely. Like most durian, orange meat durian falls to the forest ground when it is ripe. No red meat. When the fruit opens and the pulp and seeds fall to the ground, the durian is still attached to the tree. Botanist Anthony Lamb suggests that the orange succulent plant, locally known as Dalit, is a different species.

It is worth noting that durian is the only species that has successfully crossed with durio zibethinus in the wild. Mixed fruits can come in a variety of unexpected colors, from mottled or red stripes to Barbie's own bright pink. The taste is the best of both worlds.

Distribution and season

Durian grows on farms in Borneo, Palawan Island in the Philippines, and Mindandao and Peninsular Malaysia. It is also said to have been found in Sumatra.

Stinky durian begins to bear fruit in the durio zibethinus season. We found stinky durian in the Philippines in August, Sabah from October to December, and Sarawak from November to January.
