Italian poplar is a kind of landscape tree species which is suitable for landscaping and has high ornamental value. But if it is unreasonable to raise it and let it suffer from insect pests, it will make it lose its original value.

Planting and Seedling raising techniques of Italian Poplar

Preparation: Italian poplar has strong rooting ability, and its main culture method is cuttings and seedlings. Choose to raise seedlings on sandy loam or light loam with flat terrain, plenty of sunshine, fertile and soft soil and good drainage. Meticulous soil preparation, deep ploughing of about 40 meters, after leveling to make a seedbed, bed width of 1.2 meters, it is best to use ferrous sulfate 10-15 kg per mu mixed with topsoil for disinfection. Apply sufficient base fertilizer, 600 kg of barnyard manure and more than 60 kg of superphosphate per mu.

Deep planting in Datang, steady cultivation of soil: Italian poplar seedlings are easy to form adventitious roots, and deep planting in Datang is beneficial to promote seedling survival. The standard of deep planting in Datang is that the diameter and depth of the pond is not less than 80 meters, and the planting depth of seedlings is not less than 60 meters. The planting method is as follows: put the Italian poplar seedlings into the dug tree pond to stretch the roots; then fill in the topsoil and lift the seedlings up slightly in the middle of the filling, and firmly fill the soil, and then fill the soil later. Irrigate once when the fill is 15 to 20 meters above the ground, and the amount of water should be filled with tree ponds. After infiltration under the water, straighten the seedlings and cultivate the soil into the shape of steamed bread, and finally cover with plastic film to keep warm and moisturizing.

The suitable period for planting in autumn is from mid-November to early December, not later than mid-December. If the soil is frozen, it is not suitable for planting. It is suitable to plant Italian poplar (especially Imur72 and Imur69) in the middle and last ten days of March. One-year-old Italian poplar seedlings with a height of 2.5-3 meters are suitable for seed strips. The upper end of the cutter is cut flat from 1 inch from the bud, and the lower end is cut into a horse ear shape. The ear strips were soaked in clean water for more than 24 hours before cutting. the cut on the cuttings was at the level of the ground or exposed 1-2 cm, and compacted after cutting. the row spacing was 30-60 cm and 3500-4000 plants per mu.

Management of growing period: timely irrigation before cuttings rooting, weeding and fertilization in time after rooting, usually weeding, loosening soil and fertilizing once in late April and mid-June, applying 15-20 kg urea per mu, and timely control of diseases and insect pests. A small number of sprouts will grow after the cuttings have survived. When the young strips grow to about 20 centimeters long, choose to keep the one with the strongest growth, and cut off the rest. It is necessary to prevent the newly planted Italian poplar seedlings from being damaged. It is necessary to straighten the seedlings and cultivate the soil in time after rain and snow. Where there are conditions, the lower part of the newly planted Italian poplar trunk can be painted white to reduce the harm of diseases and insect pests.

Control of Diseases and insect pests of Italian Poplar

Scab disease: the abnormal buds covered with yellow powder piles can be seen on the poplar during the leaf expansion period in spring. In Jianhu County, when the temperature rose to 16 ℃ at the end of March and the beginning of April, the diseased buds appeared one or two days earlier than the healthy buds, and dried up after about 3 weeks. The disease bud appeared one after another for about 4 weeks, but a large number of disease buds appeared mainly in the middle and late April, and the peak period was from May to June. Prevention and treatment methods: remove the disease buds early in early spring and put them in bags to prevent the spread of summer spores, and then spray with Dyson zinc, Bordeaux solution, stone-sulfur mixture and so on.

Yang fan boat moth: once the Yang fan boat moth breaks out, it will eat up the leaves within 3 days. There are usually five generations a year, the first generation occurs in the first and middle of May, the second generation occurs in mid-late June, the third generation occurs from late July to early August, the fourth generation occurs in late August, and the fifth generation occurs in mid-late September. The third and fourth generations are the most harmful. Control methods: spinning leaves before the 3rd instar to form a bud, early removal of the bud can kill a large number of larvae; spray 40% dimethoate EC (1000 times) and 2.5% deltamethrin EC (2500 times) or 40% acephate EC 800mm 1000 times on the crown with a high range sprayer; inject omethoate dilution into the base of the trunk.

In fact, the cultivation of Italian poplar is relatively simple, this simplicity does not mean that it can be allowed to grow at will, we should still take good care of it where we should pay attention, so as to ensure its healthy growth, and then play the role of beautifying our living environment.
