It is the season for coral "collective spawning" in the waters around Taiwan before and after Matsu birth on March 23 of the lunar calendar. The Coral Reef Research Office of the Biodiversity Research Center of the Academia Sinica spawned on the 26th (March 22 of the lunar calendar) at a recorded coral reef on the coast of Jidong, Taitung. It was found that 8 kinds of corals, including cluster ratchet corals, striped corals, wrinkled rope corals, macroconical corals, striated corals, Chinese brain striated corals, dense striated corals and soft tube hole corals, released a large number of sperm egg bundles.

The Coral Reef Research Office of the Biodiversity Research Center of the Academia Sinica was stationed in Chenggong Town, Taitung County on the 25th to conduct a long-term ecological study on coral reef clusters on the base coast. Guo Zhaoyang, a postdoctoral fellow at the Coral Reef Research Center of the Academia Sinica Biodiversity Research Center, who participated in the study, pointed out that an article published a few days ago in the International Journal of Nature revealed that the Great Barrier Reef suffered from two consecutive years of albinism in 2016 and 2017, resulting in the death of a large number of adult corals, but also reduced the fecundity of corals to produce eggs and the success rate of subsequent coral larvae entering the coral reef area, resulting in the inability of coral reefs to recover. It has been observed that many kinds of corals can continue to lay eggs, proving that the corals off the coast of Taitung are still healthy and ready to reproduce.

Chen Zhaolun, a researcher at the research office, said that this observation in Jigu is the first time that scientific data on coral spawning have been recorded in the coral reef area on the east coast of Taiwan, and it is very precious. At present, the coral reefs in Kei and the east coast are facing many large-scale development projects and habitat destruction along the coast. Even if adult corals try to reproduce, the small corals have to face the dilemma that their habitat disappears and there is no home to live in. This is also a problem that the public sector must face.
