Southern Potato Conference Held in 2025 More than 50% of Potato in China will be used

From December 17 to 18, the 2015 Southern Potato Conference was held in Enshi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture, Hubei Province. According to the statistics of the Potato Professional Committee of the Chinese crop Society, from 2010 to 2014, the average annual planting area of potatoes in China reached 82.05 million mu, with an average annual output of 90.81 million tons, of which the southern region accounted for 49% and 52% of the country's annual planting area and total output, respectively. It is estimated that by 2025, more than 50% of potatoes in China will be consumed as staple grains.

Lu Xiaoping, deputy director of the International Potato Research Center and director of the Asia-Pacific Center, said in his speech that 2 people in the world already use potato as a staple food, and the annual per capita consumption of potato in Europe and the United States has reached 85 kilograms. China's potato production areas are highly overlapped with the distribution of poor areas, and 549 of the country's 592 poverty-stricken counties use potato as their main crop.
