Wild mint varieties, out of curiosity, I began to study this plant family a few weeks ago, because the number of wild invasive mint species is impressive, though unsolicited, but spreading in my lawn and garden. These perennials are spread through underground stems (rhizomes) and seeds.

Magnolia, especially the obnoxious, weaves a huge 1/4-inch-thick rhizome network under the entire flower bed, spreading to large lawns, sending new plants every one or two feet from underground nodes. I have pulled up the docks, yards and ropes of the intruders, but they still move on.

The wild cat mint invaded my largest vegetable garden, sowing seeds thickly on the edge of the asparagus bed. We haven't let cats like to roll around in fresh leaves for years, although I have dried many small plants for winter tea. But the cat mint I have pulled out and disposed of will provide one or two cups of soothing evening tea for every resident in Merimac County.

The ground has ivy all over the lawn, but especially likes to wander on the cultivated land. Once the snow melted and the spring rain came, it quickly spread to the vegetable garden next to our pond and turned into a thick cushion with delicate purple flowers.

Although I find it annoying, it is not nearly as difficult to eradicate as Liulan Xiang. I already know that I can pull up its big cushion with a shovel stuck at a small angle. In one of the digging exercises, I had an epiphany: what if I filled poor soil around our septic tank system and planted some of these ground ivy mats in ugly spots to grow as ground mulch? I plan to do this immediately after the regular maintenance of the septic tank system this week.

Medicinal use of peppermint plants: matters needing attention

One thing I know from the research is that most labiology has been used in traditional medicine for centuries. Many (perhaps most) are currently studying the potential uses of humans and veterinarians as pesticides or insect repellents, as well as the antifungal or antibacterial protection of crops.

These are effective plants, filled with plant compounds that plants make to protect themselves from harmful bacteria, viruses and other attacks from other evolutionary environments.

If you are interested in herbs, please be careful to approach mints, especially essential oils, tinctures and concentrated extracts. This applies to over-the-counter and homemade drugs.

Although many medicines have been used by traditional healers around the world, most herbs have not been rigorously tested for safety and efficacy, especially among pregnant / lactating women, children, the elderly and people with chronic diseases.

Look for as much information as possible from books, online resources, and experienced herbalists in your area. Whenever you start using herbs, please inform your health care practitioner.

Most herbalists recommend staying away from ingesting essential oils as medicines unless cared for and observed by herbal health care providers. Out of caution, herbalists also urge pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers and people with severe chronic diseases to avoid using peppermint essential oils in massage oils.
